Welcome to TechSpot, Matt! I'll be glad to help you.

First, did you know you were still loading processes from Norton Security Suite?

LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)

Since you have the full AVG program, it would be best if you ran this:
Norton Removal Tool

About Win32/Heur in AVG: that finding-especially when the user 'can't remove it', can be an indication of one of the file infectors. These are more pervasive that the 'average Trojan.' So I'd like you to run this scan first and we'll go from there:

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus scan HEREhttp://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the Active X control to install
  4. Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  5. Click Start
  6. Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  7. Click Scan
  8. Wait for the scan to finish
  9. Click on "Copy to Clipboard"> (you won't see the 'clipboard')
  10. Click anywhere in the post where you want the logs to go, the do Ctrl V. The log will be sent from the clipboard and pasted in the post.
  11. Re-enable your Antivirus software.
    NOTE: If you forget to copy to the clipboard, you can find the log here:
    C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Thank you for looking into this. Here are the results of the scan.

Well, that's good but strange news! But can you explain this please?

I cannot remove Win32/Heur
I am using AVG and while running a scan it said I was infected with Win32/Heur

How do you know you can't remove it? The Eset scan is clean. AVG may be picking up the entry somewhere it has actually been quarantined and is not active in the system.

The one entry that Mbam picked up and quarantined is for MyWebSearch. This come from the site FunWebProducts where many go to get cursors, wall paper, Smileys, etc. But they also get adware and sometimes spyware. So if you have any programs from FunWebSearch, they should be uninstalled.
==========================================
I'd like you to run Combofix- it will help us quarantine and also find other entries that need to be removed.
You will need to uninstall AVG to run it:

Download AppRemover and save to the desktop]
How to Use AppRemover to Remove a Complete Security Application
  1. Double click the setup on the desktop> click Next
  2. Select “Remove Security Application”
  3. Let scan finish to determine security apps
  4. A screen like below will appear:
    https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5514-appremover.htmlabout/chooseuninstall.gif/image_preview[/img[*] Click on [b]Next[/b] after choice has been made
    [*] Check the AVG program you want to uninstall
    [*] After uninstall shows complete, follow online prompts to Exit the program.[/list]
    ===================================
    Reboot the computer: [b]Download Combofix to your desktop from one of these locations:[/b][b]
    [url=http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix]Link 1[/url]
    [url=http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe]Link 2[/b][/url][list]
    [*]Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    [*]As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
    [b]**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.[/b]
    [*]Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
    [*][B]Query- Recovery Console image[/B]
    [img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RcAuto1.gif
    WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
  5. Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    whatnext.png
  6. .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  7. .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  8. .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  9. .Close any open browsers.
  10. .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
    & follow the prompts to run.
  11. When the scan completes it will open a text window. Please paste that log in your next reply.
Re-enable your Antivirus software.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Thank you again for taking the time to look at this, I do appreciate it. This is my mother-in-laws computer so I will let her know about the website FunWebSearch and advise her to uninstall whatever she has used from that site.

To answer your other question, I did not think AVG was able to do anything with the file. I ran a scan yesterday on her computer (as I do everytime I am there) and AVG came up with the infected file. I looked up Win32/Heur and tried to follow steps to remove it, and I could not find the file. At that point I thought AVG took care of it but when I scanned the computer again, AVG said it was infected. That is when I found this site. The results for ComboFix:

You're very welcome, - let's tackle the original problem. All out AVG users are posting about seeing the Win32/Heur, That is a valid malware entry-but-it appears that AVG recently put out an update that is causing the False Positive Win32/Heur warning.

If you are still seeing this, please do an update ASAP. Supposedly this has been fixed. If you look at this board, you will notice a lot of complaints about this.
===========================================
Please run this Custom CFScript:

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
    [2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    [3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap'> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:Be sure to scroll down to include ALL lines.
Code:
File::
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\securitycenter\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
Driver::
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt . No log needed.
====================
Let's make sure there are no bad entries remaining:
Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Extract it to a directory on your hard drive called c:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I'll check the HJT log and after that, you should be able to remove the cleaning tools- wait for me to check, okay?

Edit: Forgot. Java needs to be updated> Check this site Java Updates Stay current as most updates are for security. Uninstall any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs as they are vulnerabilities for the system.

Also, it appears help was given at some time by: Geek Squad 24 Hour Computer Support and they left this entry installed. You might want to go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.
