Intel vs amd?

Nice price. Don't expect stelar overclocks with a 930 on it, the nForce 4 Intel only will do like 250mhz bus. A 805 may just shine on there, but I don't really know.

eh im not a huge overclocker..the most ive done is with an old Slot A processor i got from 400mhz to 500mhz i think...otherwise ive been getting old computers from Compaq/Hp that offer no overclocking what so ever lol

AMD's fututre CPU's may even come closer to price/performance of CONROE!
what makes you think that they won't exceed Conroe's performance??

I have no doubt that if lost, AMD will take back the performance crown alot sooner than you think ;)

yay

I've made my final decision...im going with AMD

now my only decision is which...im going to stick with the AMD64 939 line...so my options for my budget are going to be the 3000+ (Venice, $110) 3200+ (Venice, $128) 3500+ (Venice, $186) and the 3800+ (San Diego, $216)

Now for the 3000+ through 3500+ im planning on getting the DFI LP UT NF4 SLi-D...or dish out the extra for the SLi-DR...or maybe save $20 and go for the Ultra-D

Anyways, my new question is which wolud i get best performance out, our which could i overclock the most on the stock (or ill buy a heatsink if needed) heatsinks.

That is a great motherboard. With 3000+ and some good memory you can have a awesome setup. Freezer Pro 64, XP 90, and Tuniq Tower 120 are very good HSFs. Honestly 2.5-2.7ghz is very doable, even with the stock HSF. How cool it runs is realy the best thing about AMD's K8, next to hypertransport. Freezer Pro 64, XP 90, and Tuniq Tower 120 are very good HSFs.

Ok, with the memory (especially on the 3000+) i could go up to possibly 2Gb within my budget, question is, Crucial or Corsair? I heard Corsair can give off a lot more heat then Crucial

I have not heard od a venice running that fast before, where have you seen this? 2.7GHz on a venice3000+???? i run a venice E3 3000+, they run stock at 1.8GHz, i got mine up to 2115MHz but that is as high as I could go (my mobo's voltage cannot go past 1.45v without a physical soldered voltage mod which i haven't attemped yet).

at stock speeds with stock HSF they will idle in the 20's and load in the low 30's (well below the max temps), so you wont have to buy a new HSF unless you want it to run quieter

I've heard good things about Mushkin...

Prob read a few reviews is your best bet.

I'm lucky, somehow my 2 x 512 Generic DDR400 runs at 250MHz!!!
(I am saving up for some better RAM)

I can vouch for the Arctic cooler pro 64 - works a treat & quite inexpensive.

Opterons are worth a look, I got the 144 @2700MHz stable as a rock.
It boogies!

***King cody - use a RAM divider, I bet thats whats holding you back....
ie instead of 2/2 , try 2/1.83 or 2/1.66 then increase the FSB.
You also have to change the Hypertransport to 3 or 4 (Keep it under 1000, ie 240FSB x 4HT = 960) lock the PCI speed, and you'll have some more luck.

thanks, I had assumed that it was the voltage that was holding me back. I'll try changing the RAM divider and see what happens

P.S. sorry for thread-jacking ;)

overclocking

Allot of people have 3000+ at 9x300mhz.

Here is my 3200+ at 10x280mhz

It's not that hard. There I have memory set 5:4 (166mhz), the HTT at 3x, Vcore at 1.55(my Asrock DualSATA2 reads Vcore wrong and it has the mod.) Now I upgraded to 2x1024mb OCZ Platimun form that 2x512 mb OCZ Gold VX I can't go that fast any more and my timings are much looser. I had it to 2.9ghz, but not stable.

If you want help PM me with a link to a thread and we will get it running. :grinthumb

nicely done lol

i jsut went through some newegg ads last night since i was bored...and i tracked the prices of the processors for everymonth *only had january 2004-december 2004 though* and according to the info i got...there should be a 20% price drop in the amd processors next month because of the AM2

or would the AM2 not affect it at all? just wondering bc if tis right the 3000+ will cost under 100 :grinthumb

Prices will go down soon. I think AM2 an the X2s are way over priced, but the Semprons look nice. Conroe is cheap, fast, and efficient. So July will change things. AMD will have no choice but to lower prices because a $530 E6700 will our perform a $1200 FX-62.

whoaa i just read an articly about the new Dell XPS systems...and they said that its a Conroe with Quad SLi Machine...WHAT???

is this the system that will eat up Oblivion? haha

My son's P5P800 died and I bought a P5P800 SE off ebay for $51 to replace it. It supports the 805, but I'll pass and get a Conroe. I'll need mobo, DDR2, and a PCI-E video card for Conroe too. It would be nice if the SE will support the E4200, it has a 800mhz FSB and expected to cost $170.

Yeah, the Conroe would be nice ( I've heard they'll be using strictly numbers, no names, on that line), but to fixed incomers like me, there's a HUGE difference between $550 and $130. I have an ECS 915P-A sittin around empty, so I'll rate the 805 after I can scrape up the rest of the parts.

Just that a dual-core near 4GH processor at that price is hard to pass up, for me. On a personal note- what went south on your son's P5P? I happen to be on one right now! :knock: :grinthumb

Im not certain, the smell came from the south bridge. He opened the DVD-RW and it just turned off, and never on again. When I forced it to turn on it made a stink. Was it the burner, the PSU, or just the mobo that did it? I really don't know. I hope it was the just the mobo.

Hey

Does anyone know what socket the Conroe processer will use? Will it use S775, or will we have to wait for a raft of new mobos to be released before we can set up Conroe systems?

Want to build a new desktop rig, but I'm loth to get a S775 mobo if that won't work with a Conroe with the time is right, know what I mean?!

It will use LGA 775, but a new CPU voltage regulator circuit is needed so new revisions of the motherboards are coming. The only mobo that is ready now that I now of it the Intel D975xBX revision 304. I would not dare order one, because you may get a older one. But there are mods here. freecablegay has a thread about compatibilite mobos here. He has a Conroe ES and has sold some to others at XS. The only other motherboards I've seen it used on is a MSI i975x that is not released, and a Dell G965 sample, all at XtremeSystems Forum. Two have been overclocked to 4GHz.

Check out this AM2 review, they have a Conroe to comapire it too. :bounce:

Nice one! Thanks very much. In that case I'll get a new gfx card and some more RAM and stick with my current setup for another 12-18 months :D

Conroe ownz

I love this,
Hexus said:
It's abundantly clear that Conroe will be the fastest CPU in town when it hits in a few weeks' time. It pulverises all present CPUs in the majority of CPU-based benchmarks. Just take a look at the Far Cry (speed) scores!
Hexus said:
There's no real need for a summary. The benchmarks tell all. Intel's Conroe simply outmuscles every currently available CPU. Would you buy an AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 now? AMD must be thinking that K8-L can't come soon enough.

K8L is comming some time early next year, first to the 65nm FX. It may or may not be faster than Core. Nobody knows yet.

amd vs intel intel sucks

I think amd all the way had intel 2.8 ghz pentium 4 1 mb cache 800mhz fsb sucked too much heat and slow now i have a athlon xp 2600+ 256k cache much faster 266mhz bus i love amd they are the best

haha well this topic has been fun...ive learned a lot from this and my parents are getting sick of me changing what im buying but hopefully what im picking now well keep me going for a while (little upgrades here and there of course)
