About a week ago my isp telephoned me to say that i was sending spam.I have an adsl connection with 4 computers in the house 2 wireless conections and 2 cable going through a router modem.I ran scans with avg and eset online scanner but nothing came up.My internet is painfully slow of late.If a computer was sending spam would this affect my connection and if it did why is it slow on each computer i connect with?Is there a way to find out which one is the culprit?Thank you!

Im very Sorry i have just read your 8 steps i will do this first on each computer and come back when i have finished.

You're forgiven! But only if you paste the HijackThis log in and attach the others!

Forgive me, it's been a long day. Will review you logs in your next reply.

Ok let me correct myself there are 3 computers connected here the fourth is not connected at all. Here are the results for computer no1 a highly suspect looking notebook.

Are you running Windows Live Messenger?? I had a case recently where someone or something hacked my messenger and that was responsible for sending out spam to all the people saved in my address book. What I did was just close the messenger (my PC is on all the time). You can disable the automatic startup for messenger as well.

Computer #1:
Mbam: No action taken.> means you did not check this:
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Update Malwarebytes and rescan with this line checked.

If a computer was sending spam would this affect my connection and if it did why is it slow on each computer i connect with?Is there a way to find out which one is the culprit?Thank you!

1. The spam does not have to be coming from your computer(s). It can be sending from anyone's computer that has your email address on it. Someone gets a mass mailing Worm, the Worm send email to everyone in the address book.

2. It shouldn't be slowing down any of the computers.

3. Finding 'which' is the culprit is moot- it is most likely not either.

Suspicious entries in HijackThis:

Please reopen HijackThis to 'do system scan only'. Check each of the following entries if present:

O4 - Startup: Styler.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: TrayMin230.lnk = ?
O16 - DPF: {6A060448-60F9-11D5-A6CD-0002B31F7455} (ExentInf Class) -

Close all Windows except HijackThis and click on "Fix Checked."

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus Scanner HERE

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the Active X control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Please download ComboFix HERE:
  • With ComboFix, at the download window, please rename it to Combo-Fix(.exe) before downloading it.
  • Please disable all security programs, such as antiviruses, antispywares, and firewalls. Also disable your internet connection.
  • Run Combo-Fix.exe and follow the prompts.
(Understand that things like your system clock changing and your desktop disappearing might happen. Do not worry, because all will be restored later.)
  • Wait for the scan to be completed.
  • If it requires a reboot, please do it.
• After the scan has completed entirely, please post the log here. The log will be located at C:\ComboFix(.txt)

Notes:

  • 1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
    2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
    3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
    4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Rescan with HijackThis ans paste in new log.

Also attach the following:
New Malwarebytes log.
Eset log
Combofix report

Edit: Question: Because of the language difference, do you know what this is?
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = Preserve

Last night I has Dutch logs, today it's French!

My girlfriends son runs messenger alot to speak and meet with his friends. He did have a problem previously where his friends on messenger kept getting false messages from him but i remember following some instructions which arranged the problem.I will ask him when he gets back later if there has been any strange behavior. It could be something like this also. What im curious to know is how this spamming would affect my internet connection speed.Im just not sure whether its the spam or my connections just bad.In a way i would prefer some obvious symptons so i would know for sure when it had been cured.
Thanks gguerra

If the ISP has contacted you about spam, I would guess that it must be a significant amount. And if you had malware of this nature on your systems and it was sending out mass mailings, technically it "could" slow down your system.

But this would not be all of the time- only when the mass mailings were going out. So when you describe "painfully slow" I wouldn't associate that with spamming.

Suggest you push the ISP for more information: ask if there is any particular location the spam is being sent. Ask what the platform average speed is for your area.

Be sure to go back and redo the Mbam scan and the HJT removals I gave you.

Ok im finally back sorry for the delay and thanks for al your time and patience!
I ran malwarebytes again checked and removed.I did this before but took the log before i checked and removed.
I fixed the following entries on hijack this

O4 - Startup: Styler.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: TrayMin230.lnk = ?
O16 - DPF: {6A060448-60F9-11D5-A6CD-0002B31F7455} (ExentInf Class) -
Then i ran eset
Combo fix told me it was not compatible with my os
The os is called windows trust which ive never seen or heard of before but the system tells me its xp with sp3.
I do not know what this line is R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = Preserve but it does not seem that French to me.I am English and my French is not amazing.hence why i find it difficult talking to my ISP about technical things.

I'm going to have to put you on hold here. I didn't know you were going to throw 3 machines at me! I'm behind in helping others and need to catch up.

First thing to do on Computer #3 is to get an antivirus program on it! It looks like you have BitDefender online scan and the Comodo firewall, but no antivirus:

Good security demands, in part, that you have an up-to-date antivirus program. This protects the system against viruses, Worms and some Trojans. Without this protection, the system is more vulnerable to attacks. Since you do not have an antivirus program, please consider installing one of the following programs- Note: You should have only one antivirus program.
Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:

Avira Free
Avast Home

Please reboot the system after the installation is complete.

Once the programs is installed, you should check for updates immediately and then run a full system scan. This will help to make sure the program is configured and working properly and alert you to any viruses that might be on the system as a result of not having a functional AV.

NO problem bobbye i cant thank you enough as it is.I feel a bit a bit guilty with all the help you have given me as im not giving anything in return.I think im going to do a fresh install on machine 2 as it seems the worst of all of them.Still a few general questions id like to ask you about spam if you dont mind?thanks again for all of your help and hope you get some rest at the weekend!

Well, as you can tell, I got sidetracked. But I'd like to finish you up.

Lots of advertising on Computer #3

Zango:
"What is Zango?
Zango is a entertainment site with free access to videos, music, games, and other downloads. The site is free to all users, but is paid for by advertisements. Visitors are presented with an end user license agreement that they accept before downloading any content.

Zango does display popup advertisements and such to pay for the games and videos. The Zango software includes a search assistant and toolbar. Since the software does not collect or share any information about users they are not considered spyware but rather adware. Advertiser sponsored free software that anyone can view and play as long as they are willing to view the ads that go along with it.
This is an Optional Removal. I recommend that you uninstall this for the following reasons:
Adware or advertising-supported software is any software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertisements to a computer after the software is installed on it or while the application is being used. Some types of adware are also spyware and can be classified as privacy-invasive software.

  • How Do I Remove Zango?
[1] Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
[2] Double click on Add/Remove Programs
[3] Find "Zango" in the list of installed programs and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it. There may also be a program called Media Gateway, remove it as well.
[4] You'll be presented with the following screen during the uninstall process, you'll want to check either the Zango toolbar or Search Assistant, or both before clicking Next to complete the uninstall.

[5] Reboot your Computer and run HijackThis in 'do system scan only'. Check any of the following entries if present:

C:\Program Files\Zango\zango.exe
C:\Program Files\ZangoToolbar\Bin\4.8.3.0\ZbSrv.exe
O2 - BHO: Zango Search Assistant Helper /fleok=1D8A83A5C5E0117D9CA975760EA83FA5EF80752B94E2DE765D754E2937C3 - {56F1D444-11BF-4879-A12B-79CF0177F038} - c:\program files\zango\zangohook.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Zango Toolbar - {5CBE2611-C31B-401F-89BC-4CBB25E853D7} - C:\Program Files\ZangoToolbar\Bin\4.8.3.0\ZbHostIE.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zango] "c:\program files\zango\zango.exe"

Close all Windows except HijackThis and click on "Fix Checked."

Boot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Select the Safe Mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.

Using Windows Explorer: Right click on Start> Explore> Local Drive (C)> Programs> do a right click> delete on thef ollowing if present:
Zango
Media Gateway

NOTE: You likely won't find all of the Zango entries- but if you do decide to remove it, just remove those you do find.

Let me know how that goes. Then I'll give you the instructions for removing the cleaning tools on all of the systems (easy!) and have you set new clean restore points.
