Konami's new Metal Gear title, a co-op survival game set in an alternate reality, arrives next year

When Hideo Kojima unceremoniously left Konami to form Kojima Productions last year, it spelled the end of his nearly 30-year association with the Metal Gear Solid series he created. However, it didn’t mean the famous name would cease to exist, as Konami held on to the IP.

Back in June, there was disappointment when the Japanese firm announced its first post-Kojima Metal Gear project would be a pachinko game based on MGS 3: Snake Eater. For those who don’t know, Pachinko is like a mix between pinball and a gambling slot machine - they're very popular in Japan.

But it's just been revealed at Gamescom that a new entry in the Metal Gear Solid universe will be released next year on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Set directly after the events of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain prequel Ground Zeroes, Metal Gear Survive is a four-player co-op survival game.

The game keeps the series’ “famed stealth elements but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience," according to Konami.

Metal Gear Survive is based in an “alternate timeline caused by unexplained wormholes forming in the sky,” and the action takes place in a harsh desert landscape "full of massive half-formed structures, living biological threats, and the remains of a once strong military force now litter the landscape."

We briefly see Big Boss at the start of the trailer, but it’s unclear if his role in the game will extend beyond a cameo.

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to learn that the internet isn’t reacting well to a Metal Gear game without Kojima, especially one that seems so different from the previous titles. In the few hours that the video has been on YouTube, it’s already amassed over 25,000 dislikes and just 2416 likes.

They aren't reacting to a MG game without Kojima. They're reacting to what this video indicates is a phoned-in license cash grab.

"I've go it! We'll make a zombie game!"

Shark jumped.

I can care less. Without Kojima and the team they can make whatever they want and I'd still not care.

The only positive thing I can think of is their focus on coop. Friends and I have been struggling to find new coop games to play together--not many new releases with that feature set.

This is a good idea actually because any attempt to make a serious MGS game without Kojima will only make them look worse than this atrocity. Eagerly awaiting Konami to be absorbed into a serious company like Capcom. :D
