Logitech MX Master Wireless Mouse Review: A worthy successor

Wow like Arris I can’t understand what you are doing to the MX Performance mice to burn though them so fast, it can’t just be down to heavy use. I have only owned two since they came out and the buttons on the first one never died, after a few years the sensor started to play up. The second one lasted longer than the first, well it’s still going.

There would be few people that spend more time working at their PC than I do so usage can’t be the problem. Not to mention back in the early MX Performance days when I was younger much of my free time was spent playing games which I find are considerably more demanding on my mouse than any productivity work.

I know if I were replacing a mouse once a year I would give it a second chance and that’s it. I find it totally unacceptable for a mouse to only last 12 years regardless of workload.

As for the battery a few people are reporting the same but mine never fell short of a few weeks in either model. The same is true to the G700s which also lasted at least a few weeks. The MX Master is still on its original charge so it will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

Are you messing with me ;)

I gave it a score of 95 and....

"The MX Master will sell for $100, the same price as the MX Performance all those years ago. That seems like a fair price given that the MX Master works as well as its predecessor while offering some updates. Its improved build quality, new features and all around better looking design make the MX Master a worthy successor."

Pros: Beautifully refined design, extremely comfortable, advanced features, clean software, well priced for a premium product.

Hi Steve,

First off, thank you for the great article reviewing the MX Master. I really enjoyed reading it and getting your up-close experience with it. Looking forward to your future writings about it.

Despite my longevity experience with the MX Perf, I stuck by the mouse since it was introduced because I really like it and the design is just right for millions of miles of comfortable usage. I plan on the Master being my next one for many of the reasons you cited in the article, unless those side buttons are too far back to reach comfortably.

Maybe the Master won't give me the left button issues of the Performance, so we'll see how that goes. Like I said to Arris, it's the 3 year warranty on the Perf that also helped and Logitech was good about replacing them. The 1 year warranty of the Master concerns me, because if I had to buy a new Perf every year because it was out of warranty, then I might have considered another mouse.

As for the $100 price that bothers some, just wait for it to hit Amazon. Like the Perf, the Master will probably be listed for around $70 +/- after the new car smell wears off. Best Buy fluctuates their sale pricing between $50-70 for the Perf and I expect the same for the Master. If the mouse works for your particular setup and mousing ergonomics (as it does in my case), a few dollars more for the comfort is worth it.

Incidentally, I use a Logitech M510 for my Windows 8 laptop and tablet PCs instead of an MX because the MX is just overkill there and a royal pain to stuff into the bag with the other toys. I found the M510 to be a really nice mini version of the MX Perf.

Go back to reviewing 101, Steve. Your reviews read like pure fanboi propaganda. "Ooohh, I love it, and I give it a 95". Seriously unprofessional bias. Use it for 6 months straight and you will change your tune if you are honest with your readership.

LOL thanks for posting I enjoyed it :) Have you been using yours for 6 months? Please do let us all know why I would change my tune.

I had a Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse before. But something happened and I lost that tiny USB dongle. Maybe misplaced and the vacuum sucked it. In short, its gone. Apparently, there is no replacement for that dongle and you cant buy it as a single piece in any electronics store. The best option the guy in the store told me is to buy a new set, meaning I should throw the keyboard and the mouse too whether they are still working. I now have a wired Razer Keyboard and Mouse.

Which model was the Logitech keyboard and mouse?

Yuki...you can usually find replacements on Ebay. I've found many selling just the receivers/dongles because they're parting out their sets that they don't use anymore.

Anyone who's using the Master now: How comfortable is it to hit the forward/back buttons with your thumb when palming the mouse like normal? Are they too far back or positioned well?

I'm surprised too by their life expectancy with me. It sounds like you and I do similar work (coding & graphics), except for the gaming. I stuck with the MX Perf because it's just a great mouse overall, nice & big for palm mousing, just the right buttons, and it always makes other mice look like wimps...LOL. And the warranty...if it weren't for the 3 year warranty that many of them were replaced under, I would have found a new mouse.
I have to admit I've never had an issue when I've had to contact Logitech regarding a problem. I had charging issues with the Logitech Dinovo Edge keyboard, they just asked for the bluetooth dongle to be returned and set me another one... Although someone at work managed to dig into it (peel backing off, get screws undone with some torx driver) and fix a loose battery connection and then I had two working keyboards!

Have you ever tried a trackball James?
I found that I was suffering a little RSI pain from using my mice so often that I ended up getting a Kensington Slimblade to use at work. Now that I use a trackball at work and a mouse (G602/Performance) at home I don't get any pain anymore. Not really pain related for you but for work after a little adjustment I found the trackball to be a good alternative, and quite robust, especially since it remains static on the desk :)

Arris,

I don't have any wrist or pain issues with my MX or other mice because the ergonomics of my layout & position makes my hand & wrist sit in a straight line. I tried trackballs in the past, but never really took to them.

Great review. After 6 years of faithful service my old Performance MX's left button is now failing and now I'm looking for a new mouse. This looks like the perfect mouse for me except for two things: 40 day only battery life and internal iPhone like battery. I know high end mice like these consume more energy because of its sensor tech but I really wish it had battery life like its lower end siblings like the m320 and the marathon mice. It was annoying replacing the battery (and recharging it again) of my MX every month. Also what happens if the built in internal battery craps out on you prematurely? Is it replaceable?

I was just looking over the Master's web page, PDF docs & support and didn't see any details about what the battery really is. Did you see a description about the battery being built-in or is it a replaceable rechargeable battery, like the MX Performance? And I also noticed just now that the underside pictures don't show a battery compartment door. Now I'm wondering.

The fact that the battery is non-replaceable and there is only a 1 year warranty is a concern for this premium product.

So far the MX Master is still running on the first charge. I really hope the batteries in these things do stand the test of time.

A non-replaceable battery & 1 year warranty...is not acceptable for a premium $100 mouse. This will hurt Logi's rep when unsuspecting customers have problems after the warranty expires. I'll stick with my MX Performance mice.

First choice is the Logitech - M570 which I've been using a version of the same style for 15ish years. Way back when they were still wired. :p Anyway, due to the learning curve with most forms of trackball's I also have a standard wireless mouse hooked up for others to use. The other side is the fact that I am left handed we (lefty's) have had to learn to adapt to the right handed world where the selection of "cool" mice is severely limited. Yes I know the M570 is one of those but it's by far the most comfortable thing to use when sitting on the couch arm rest.
