Ok I want you to read this first, once your done go ahead and remove your old drivers.
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answ...play-drivers-on-a-microsoft-windows-based-pc?
Once done reboot 1 time to reflect your changes, check device manager in vista to make sure it is gone.
https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/55029
That is the most recent drivers for your video card, install them then do a reboot to reflect the changes.
If you manage to get it done come back here and tell us what happen.
Just curious here but which service pack is installed on your vista computer ?

The only way I could get the laptop to work was to reinstall vista and not install any updates
so far it is working fine
the three previous times I reinstalled vista and I updated the software with service pack 1 and 2 the
problem with the graphics card occurred so I am now trying it without any updates and so far it is working

Here is an update
the laptop has worked for about over 2 hours with no faults turned the laptop off for about half an hour
and the fault has reoccurred the screen is in six sections and the only way I can access the laptop is to
plug in a monitor into the vga port and bootup the screen is distorted and vertical lines I was able to
go into the device manager and under display the properties for the NVidia GeForce graphics chip
this is the message it had displayed
WINDOWS HAS STOPPED THIS DEVICE BECAUSE IT HAS REPORTED PROBLEMS CODE 43

I'm not to sure but it sounds like your mobile vga card maybe bad or windows vista might be a real problem.
Read these 2 links please so you can understand why I am saying this.
https://www.lifewire.com/43-errors-explained-2619238

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2041/~/windows-vista:-code-43-error-in-device-manager-in-systems-with-ati-agp-cards

If you read that second link and read towards the bottom, nvidia developers are telling you to chuck your computer setup and upgrade.
If money maybe a problem the only thing left to rule out that its not your computer or vga failing.
Try windows 7 30 day trial, install the drivers for windows 7 32bit and see what happens.
