Microsoft has now made Windows 10 a 'recommended update' rather than an optional one

Microsoft is continuing its quest to get Windows 10 installed on every PC on the planet. After it revealed last month that all new processors will only be compatible with the company’s latest operating system, it’s now been announced that Windows 10 has become a ‘Recommended update’ in the Windows Update application, rather than an optional one.

Microsoft did say back in October that it would change the Windows 10 listing so it would become a recommended update in “early 2016."

“As we shared in late October on the Windows Blog, we are committed to making it easy for our Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers to upgrade to Windows 10. We updated the upgrade experience today to help our customers, who previously reserved their upgrade, schedule a time for their upgrade to take place,” a Microsoft spokesperson told VentureBeat.

The change means that anyone using Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 that has automatic updates activated with recommended updates automatically selected will have Windows 10 downloaded without requesting it.

Microsoft has stressed that users will have a say on whether or not they want Windows 10 installed; it isn’t a mandatory update and users will be able to stop the install process. There will also be a 30 day period where users can roll back to the previous version of Windows.

Microsoft aims to have Windows 10 installed on 1 billion devices over the next two or three years, and the company is doing everything it can to increase uptake. The OS recently passed Windows 8.1 and Windows XP to become the second most-used operating system in the world.

While the newest iteration of Windows has been generally well-received by most users (barring some privacy issues), there are those who say Microsoft’s tactics at getting people to install Windows 10 sometimes verge on the excessive.

So relent already and just install it. There'll come a time that we'll have no option but to turn our backs on the much loved Win 7.

It's so much more than a wish to keep W7. It is a matter of Freedom of Choice. Probably a long-forgotten concept for some. Microsoft has become too powerful when it can dictate what we can do with our own hardware. Can't anyone see there is so much more to their bullyboy strategy? They are so desperate to lock us into their game plan that they are giving it away. When we refuse an update that prepares the way for the auto upgrade they quietly sneak it back in. Wake up people. Microsoft have been far too cozy with the NSA for a while now but that doesn't mean you have to invite them in for dinner.

Pretty soon they will fill your place with a sedative gas and when you wake up all your computers will be running Windows 10 and you will have no recollection that it ever had any other OS

It's just the way of the world. You can't stop the juggernaut that is progress. I'd like to think my current hardware will remain relevant for the next ten years but I'm a realist (and a skeptic) and that's never going to happen. M$ WILL successfully kill off Win 7 and no matter how much you resist, it's futile.

Google's Android? Apple's IOS? Both of these OS installations eclipse Windows in Market size, but I guess they don't apply to your analogy of being locked into a company's clutches? Chances are you even use them more than you use Windows. They simply decide your phone is no longer relevant 3 years on, and you're forced to upgrade, they decide to force an update on you and all's dandy in your world, hey? This kind of resistance crumbles when it's Google that encourages you to upgrade to Marshmallow because its a safer operating system with many "improvements" to it's well documented Google eavesdropping mechanisms, but Microsoft be damned if it's them pushing it. Arguably they are the only one here with an OS actually worth a damn in any real sense.

That's fine, I'm sure all the companies running Windows 7 will be happy to collect the lawsuit money if their machines are forced to windows 10.

If it was progress, but IMO, just another insecure release of Windows. Funny how they keep saying each new release is more secure than the previous, yet still send out hundreds of security updates. You can stop the juggernaut if you switch to Apple (expensive) or to a free OS like Linux (Linux Mint with the MATE desktop). Unless you are doing something that only exists and can only run on Windows (e.g., Excel macros, maybe), you will find you can do all or most everything on Linux and for free.

You are talking tablets/smart phones compared to laptops and desktops. Windows phone has not been well received per reports. Not has Surface been a rousing success also per current reports. BTW, reports not generated by Microsoft. Its not Google or Apple who forces you to update your smart phone, you make that choice with the phone company. Same with a tablet, again, you decide whether or not to buy a new tablet. iOS updates have been free. And, of course, there is always Linux for the desktop/laptop and its always free and will do everything Windows can do for most people.

I agree - "IF" it were progress. It's not. MS is simply changing the target. If they spend half as much time fixing what was still wrong with 7, they could actually have an OS that was a keeper. They'd also be able to sell it to more folks instead of giving it away free to individuals. The part that stinks is that they find it so much easier dealing with big corporations where a small group of people buy the OS for tens of thousands. It all comes back to the money. If they can cut back how much it costs to sell it, they can make bigger profits with lower cost.

At the same time, they can claim their new OS will work on smaller microprocessors because they're removing features that require so much overhead. It definitely IS NOT progress, it's just different.

It's just an OS, why so much noise about these things? Have a life!

Well most of us do more than watch cartoons and porno all day and night. That's why
Yeah, I guess whining about how MS is stealing your precious high school excel project means more than watching anime and porn... 99% of the people complaining about privacy are actually doing just that. What data do you have on your ancient computer running XP that will fatten the purse of the big companies?
Besides, go ahead and install any flavor of Linux or MacOS, if you really are doing something productive and want security, just as bobc4012 said.

I'm still using Win 7 with six months more before "upgrading". I've simply not been sure Win 10 is really ready for prime time. I suppose I'll have to upgrade eventually since I like building computers with the latest CPU, but for now......

It's simple really. You choose your poison and run with it. There's no reason to use them all.

To borrow something from Star Trek...
"Why do you resist us? We only seek to raise quality of life for all PCs."
"I like my PC the way it is."
"A narrow vision? Your PC will become one with Windows 10. All of your PCs will become one with Windows 10."

So relent already and just install it. There'll come a time that we'll have no option but to turn our backs on the much loved Win 7.

The problem is many of us run hardware or software that isn't supported on Windows 10 yet. Protools would be a prime example of crucial software we use that has issues and isn't officially supported.

I have on my machines, But my girlfriends laptop is another story, They keep trying to push the update but they do not support the graphics processor in it and apparently never will. If they force it to win 10 it will basically break it.

This is an old news... why bring it up again? Techspot running out of "baits"? :p

As Icysoul said above, it's just an OS, get a life.

Yeah, it's just an OS. No one is going to force you to install it. If you're happy with Win7, keep it. The rest will not mind upgrading.

I was a hater of Win8, but upgraded to Win10 without much trouble. In fact it's the smoothest update (then again, it's the only Windows OS upgrade I have ever done... previous ones were all clean installs). And no difference between using Win7 and Win10. In fact, Win10 is much more refined and faster on the same system.

Those who are afraid of Win10 breaking their software/drivers, can continue using Win7. And can wait for new software versions or not upgrade at all. Your choice.

And all the security and privacy mumbo
jumbo... I'm just too tired reading the paranoia. Whether you like it or not those who are snooping can snoop anyhow.
The rest of us, can continue moving forward.

It's sometimes fun to watch a Techspot columnist drops a catchy topic bait and readers fight over it...

It looks like she'll be replacing her hardware pretty soon. M$ are true to their word, they said that Win 10 will only work on more modern hardware.
