Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to thousands of US workers as AI spending takes priority

A hot potato: Microsoft is set to reduce headcount at the company as it spends an increasingly obscene amount of money on AI infrastructure. This time, rather than laying off workers, the Redmond firm is reportedly offering voluntary buyouts to employees – something Microsoft has never done in its 51-year history.

The buyout program will open to around 7% of Microsoft's US employees, according to CNBC, which cites a person familiar with the plans who can't be named.

The Redmond giant had around 228,000 employees globally and 125,000 in the US as of June 2025, which means up to 8,750 people could be offered a paid exit when the program begins in May.

The buyouts are being referred to as a one-time retirement program. It will be available to US workers at the senior director level and below whose years of employment and age add up to 70 or higher. Those with sales incentive plans cannot participate.

Companies are laying off employees at an accelerating rate, and it's nearly always as a result of AI – either automation replacing jobs or spending on the technology taking priority.

"Our hope is that this program gives those eligible the choice to take that next step on their own terms, with generous company support," Microsoft's executive vice president and chief people officer Amy Coleman wrote in a memo.

Microsoft has let go of thousands of workers over the last year as it ramps up spending on all things AI-related.

In May 2025, the company said it was laying off 6,000 workers, around 3% of its global workforce. The move came as Microsoft designated $80 billion in capital spending for the fiscal year, with most of it aimed at expanding data centers for its artificial intelligence services.

Worse news came in July when another 9,000 cuts were announced. These job eliminations came as Microsoft thrived financially. CEO Satya Nadella explained this contrast as the "enigma of success in an industry that has no franchise value," which no doubt made those who lost their jobs feel better.

After 15,000 people had been made unemployed, Nadella's compensation increased 22% to $96.5 million in October, further illustrating this enigma of Big Tech.

In Q2 2026, Microsoft spent $37.5 billion in capital expenditures, most of it going toward data center projects.

It appears spending on AI, rather than being replaced by technology, is what's costing Microsoft workers their jobs. Meta employees are facing the same scenario: the social media giant is cutting 8,000 of its staff to bankroll its AI ambitions.

Microsoft added ~ 77,000 employees during Covid (2020 - 2022).
Even after all the layoffs since then, it's still ~ 40K more people, or about 30% above the pre-Covid level - a colossal number. That's returning to normal after a ginormous overhiring spree.
The layoffs from 2023 / 2024 / 2025 have absolutely nothing to do with AI. There's no reason to believe this has anything to do with AI either.

What's the purpose of constantly fanning AI hysteria?

What's the purpose of constantly fanning AI hysteria?

The reason for the “hysteria” can only be seen by those who can see more than one step ahead. Perhaps put down the phone for a minute or more for a change. The world these Luciferians want to bring about, is AI governance through Technocracy, and incidentally Elon Musk’s grandfather was the developer of this system of government decades ago. Now they want to implement it and make the rest of the people the “useless eater” class.

I don't see anyone advocating we give AI models the right to vote. Do you?

...and incidentally Elon Musk’s grandfather was the developer of this system of government decades ago.
Instead of tinfoil-hat theories, why not stick to the facts here? We've had social and cultural revolutions based around the discovery of bronze, iron, concrete, heat engines (the industrial age), computers, and the Internet. This is merely the next step on the chain.

Now they want to implement it and make the rest of the people the “useless eater” class.
Quite a few people already are "useless eaters", as even in the US, 40% of adults don't work at all, and are more than happy to just collect government benefits, to spare them the burden of caring for themselves. The AI revolution will almost certainly increase this figure to over 50%. So?

Perhaps you should take your own advice and stop reading conspiracy theories about Lucifer or whatever insane sources you find about Musks grandfather (who was living in south africa, so......), and take a look at the real world around you. Maybe go outside and touch some grass.

Were just in a recession. Corporations way overhired during the Red Lung and are looking for any way to reduce headcount without massive pushback.

It seems some didn't even read the article, workers are being replaced by AI and I don't see what the purpose is of constantly defending how great AI is while in reality it's doing a whole lot of nothing for the average person.
We've been in a recession since 2020, it isn't just a recession anymore though.

While AI is a useful tool, it has been dramatically oversold. The part that gets me is that I don't think any of these companies have even gotten close to having a return on the mass AI investment. Egos and fear of missing out are driving this at the moment, and it won't stop anytime soon.

For a good parallel, one need look no further than Meta's all in on the Metaverse. Meta dumped billions upon billions of dollars into it and have nothing to show for it. Meanwhile, their core products have been losing their edge for a while now.

Microsoft is probably dumping valuable talent needed to sort out their long floundering Windows product. Why would they fix and sort out it's overpatched, outdated and bloted Windows code when they can dump money into the AI race and add it to Windows at the same time.

The best part is that all of these companies are dumping workers not due to added efficiency of AI, but to feed the AI beast in hopes of finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow., .

No, not BLIND. Simply not naive enough to believe id1otic claims.
There's no connection whatsoever between letting go employees and increased investment in AI.

Just like pretty much everyone in tech, Microsoft went on an overhiring spree during Covid. The horrendous mishandling of the pandemic opened up a huge opportunity for everyone providing online services, and Microsoft reacted accordingly by hiring thousands upon thousands of new employees to take advantage of it. Now many of these services, and the employees behind them, are no longer necessary - so Microsoft, along with everyone else, is returning to normal by letting a part of the no longer needed employees go. That's the only reason behind the layoffs everywhere in tech, it has absolutely nothing to do with AI.
