Eagerly awaited: The wait is over. Microsoft is finally ready to reveal what the Xbox Series X can really do. Next week it will livestream gameplay footage of several upcoming games for the console, including Assassin's Creed Valhalla. If you've been waiting to see how the new Box performs, be sure to set an alarm, so you don't miss it.

We already know that the Xbox Series X will look a bit like a refrigerator, only smaller. We also know most of the specs — 3.8GHz 8-core AMD Zen 2 capable of 12 TFLOPS, 16GB RAM, 2.5GB/s 1TB NVMe SSD. That gives us an idea of what the system is capable of, but it would be nice to see the console in action. Fortunately, we will not have to wait long.

On Thursday, Microsoft tweeted that it has scheduled an Xbox Series X gameplay reveal for May 7. The company said it would have games from its "global development partners" to showcase but did not list any specific studios.

However, Ubisoft Nordic replied to Microsoft's announcement saying it would premiere a gameplay trailer for its upcoming Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which appears to be a non-exclusive launch title for the Series X. The studio dropped the cinematic trailer this morning. It will be nice to see if the gameplay looks just as good.

No other developers have chimed in with something to present at this time, but it is sure to be a decent showing. What? Did someone just say Halo Infinite? We'll see.

The special gameplay edition of Inside Xbox premieres next Thursday at 8am PDT.

I miss the original Xbox and Xbox 360 when Microsoft was willing to give the buyer what they wanted.

Xbox One and Series X seems like they are precision engineered to anger Xbox fans.

Xbox one sure, but what about series x is "precision engineered to anger Xbox fans"?

I don't know what you talking about, I cant wait for XSX to come out, Xbox One was a bit effy but Xbox One X fixed my issues with the console, XSX will be amazing

Lack of user upgradeable SSD outside of more of their proprietary nonsense.

Just to name one.

The design is ridiculous.

How is this stupid, ugly looking thing gonna fit in most home theater setups? Sitting the floor standing tall?

Curious...how ?

I like the backwards compatibility they announced (and that was shown), specs seem right....nothing to anger me, but then again I do not see myself as a fan but rather user / customer.

Am still curious what fans would be angry at.

Tastes differ I'd say but you can place it sideways.

As for the SSD...you could have a point, but that depends on the cost of the expansion card.
Thing is using a standard nVME may lead to problems with both new consoles since IO is an important part of the consoles' engineering, so not sure if allowing users to put in anything would be a good idea or could lead to unhappy customers down the road.

Yup, it's because of user experience. Sure MS has a proprietary SSD already announced, but nobody so far has said that 3rd party won't be allowed. Heck, Sony has also announced that only certified SSD's can be used in the PS5 (and as of today exactly 0 are officially supported).

So, not enough to go on to call it nonsense, just an easy thing to be disingenuous about.

...wut?

The overwhelming consensus towards the Series X is positive, with people praising how forward and transparent Microsoft has been about everything from the design and internals to specs and emphasis on backwards compatibility and improving old game experiences.

Xbox fans are literally chomping at the bit for the machine.

Your fixation on a user upgradeable SSD is a straw man; no Xbox has EVER had a user-friendly upgrade process for internal parts. You seem disappointed that MS isn't turning the Xbox into a PC, which is kind of odd given the PC with that feature already exists.

It fits sideways and is smaller than a home theater receiver in that configuration. If you can fit an A/V receiver in your home theater, you can fit a Series X.

Microsoft have already said that the games launching will be on Xbox one as well. So all you're going to get is games the same with better graphics. I'm really hoping launch a few PS5 only games.

You lay it on its side if you don't have vertical space no taller then a GameCube then. If you're not able to fit the system at that point the space you were trying to use was already too small most system in the past would require at least 6" around all sides that vented (top / sides in the past).

People complaining about the size are the same ones with ps4 pro that are screaming like a banshee from being choked for air.

I've never understood this interest in "exclusive" next gen games when these do come in the past they've typically boiled down to tech demos you pay for or broken messes that were rushed I'd rather games be developed for longer over a period of time that allows full investment. Not to mention pc games don't come with "exclusives next gen games" games just evolve as they go and hit different hardware requirements they definitely don't cut off the parts previously considered the best in the segment. It takes a long time over a revolving list for parts to move from recommended to minimum to not supported.

Consoles of today are nothing but pc's and to match the development cycles of the pc only makes sense.

A lower tier experience shouldn't just be ignored because of some need to make something "exclusive" for if someone with older hardware wants to have a chance to play it in whatever form that takes they should be able to.

I can't wait for new consoles to come out!
I mean I don't care for PS5 or Xbox, but I sure fancy a new gamepads for my PC.
I'll never give up my Xbox elite with scuff paddles mod!I would get a series 2 but they made using the scuff paddles with it impossible by getting trod of the battery door.

I'll take a user upgradeable replaceable AA system with the CHOICE to use disposable or even a play and charge kit vs the built in battery that can't be replaced (easily) and offers 0 instant "top up" and options. If it dies your plugging in no way around it!

Not to mention that again without the battery door my sufff paddles don't work!

Well most of Sony's first party games had 3-5 years development. All systems need a killer app otherwise there's no point upgrading. This last generation of console games felt like a graphical bump over the gen before, maybe slightly bigger open world's but overall it wasn't a massive leap. If Sony or Microsoft are serious they need to take full advantage of the hardware.
