In the second quarter of Microsoft's fiscal 2014 (the fourth calendar year of 2013), the company exceeded expectations to post a significant rise in revenue and profits over the same period last year. On $24.52 billion in revenue, Microsoft achieved $6.56 billion in net income, both of which are a rise on last year's $6.38 billion net income from $21.46 billion in revenue.

In the earnings report, Microsoft revealed that they managed to ship 3.9 million Xbox One consoles in the quarter, which is slightly less than the 4.2 million PlayStation 4s Sony shipped in 2013. The Xbox One was the top selling console in the United States in December, which could be due to low PlayStation 4 stock at many retail locations, but nevertheless the next-gen console battle remains quite close.

Revenue from Microsoft's tablet line, Surface, more than doubled in the quarter, rising from $400 million last quarter to $893 million. Sales were likely boosted by the release of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, which featured similar designs to their predecessors, but packed more powerful internals and other refinements including Windows 8.1 out-of-the-box.

Bing income increased thanks to more users using the search engine over market-leader Google, and although Office and Windows revenues fell, Microsoft was glad to report 3.5 million Office 365 Home Premium subscribers. The "soft" PC market is having an effect on the Redmond company, but the diverse product range of Microsoft seems to be carrying it quite well.

Seeing Surface's on a lot of TV Shows that I watch as of late, I'll bet this is a big reason people buy them :) kudo's

They forgot to mention they had to ship 3.9 mil consoles but only to cover all the faulty ones otherwise that figure would've been significantly less.
Now who the hell voluntary uses Bing when Google exists?

I'm reasonably impressed, the Xbox One had a bad rep on most websites yet has still sold very well, I would really like to see these numbers cut down to a per country basis, I would place a decent amount of money that most sales are in the US.

Microsoft's dedicated ad campaign for Surface combined with a slash in prices has it selling. The Xbox1 will sell regardless of how bad or good it is, its your only option if you don't like Sony.
Personally I would like to see Nintendo release a polygon crunching machine, I'm ready for a new Metroid.

Surface revenue doubled? That's quite good, I personally was looking at one of them at Best Buy, I thought it was a pretty nifty device.

Even if that figure includes faulty ones, there were not that many faulty XB1's, neither console this gen have had an excessive amount of failures this go round.

Honestly the Ad Campaigns from Microsoft have been the real key here for sales on both devices, I see so many XB1 and Surface commercials on a daily basis on TV and the internet that its getting alot more notice. Sony is doing a good ad campaign with the PS4, but they are not really showcasing enough games with it more than doing those commercials like CoD does with 'real' gamer people. Either way I think both consoles are doing their job this round in terms of being sold to the consumer and are starting to give a decent amount of games on them (Some were a bit slow to the market).

I'm with you. I have a monster gaming PC to play console-type games. I need me some good Nintendo style action!

Wow, what an ignorant comment. I don't even know if I want to try and correct your misconceptions, but lets try give it a go.
Faulty Xbox one's? What about all those faulty PS4's, if we really want to start getting picky about it? Who uses bing? I do, and I can honestly say that I have never been happier. Used Google for years, got so used to their way of doing things, that when I decided to give bing and all of Microsoft's other services a try, I almost switched back because of the different experience, but once I got used to it, I must admit that its actually a refreshing change. Don't even try and give me that bull crap line that Google's search results are better, because quite simply put, they aren't, they aren't worse either, they are exactly the same within reason, just with different presentation which is actually what makes all the difference.
And MS, Yahoo etc don't? Don't be so naïve.
Based on your first comment, I call hypocrite about being naïve.

Good to see surface revenue increasing. It is a nice tablet. Imagine a Tegra K1 in the next gen surface. That will be a beast.

Personally I prefer the Intel Chips in these devices because they just have more refinement and give a good amount of power for the size and the power usage. I just do not see the Tegra chips really doing enough yet, I would like some either Iris Pro Low power i5's inside these devices or an AMD Jaguar APU. Though I doubt that either will hit those devices anytime soon sadly

For the regular surface, not the pro. But then again, the OS (Windows RT) wont allow for full utilization of the K1.

True I was mostly thinking about the pro in my mind, but still im not sure yet how I feel about the K1. I guess time will tell, but then again Intel has let the Atom sit to long so many other Tablet chips have gotten better than it so maybe the K1 is a much better option.

There have been pretty legit rumors over the past few months hinting that Microsoft will utilize nVidia Tegra GPUs soon. The Tegra 4 was ok so they probably delayed the utilization of nVidia CPUs till later.

Well ill be curious to see what they can do if this happens then because if Microsoft wants to make the jump then maybe they are going to be better than the Atom's. Then again they are already using the Tegra, kinda forgot about that they are already being utilized according to the Microsoft site.

I do!!

Now I would like you to stop asking. That is if you don't want me to start asking why people use Google when Bing exist. What difference does it make who uses what as long as it works for them? Too many skidmarks will lead to irrational questioning.

umm you need yo go check out the bay trail reviews, its not a graphical powerhouse, but its the best intel has put into a low power chip and in usual intel fashion they have beaten just about every other high end quad core ARm soc except the ones that are shipping in $900 phones and $400 tablets, major difference intel is putting these into $300 8" windows 8 tablets.

Honestly the next line of the surface series will prob not have a RT in it, Microsoft is the only company who is still interested in RT devices, granted they did just make it free for OEM's to license but full windows 8.1 tablets have invaded the RT market share and bring full office 2013 and powerful Intel quad cores with them, just don't see Microsoft keeping the ARM powered devices coming.

Why stop there? Why not multiple multi core zeon's to power a tablet

Now that I want to see!! Also Up 32/64GB RAM to add to the pointlessness... :)

Could the Tegra be used as a dedicated graphics chip rather than a APU?

Bing is far better for porn searches. Even when Google's safe search is "disabled" it still only brings up relatively "softcore" results when searching under images or video, even when using explicitly hardcore search terms.

Microsoft would release a statistic like "we shipped 3.9 million units to retailers"...well that explains why they're overflowing all over NYC with no-one buying them.
