What just happened? With everything becoming more expensive and many people tightening their belts, Netflix has decided now is a good time to raise subscription prices for the second time in just over a year. All three of its tiers are being hiked, with the most expensive Premium plan now $26.99 per month and the cheapest option rising to $8.99.

The streaming giant's new pricing pushes the Standard With Ads plan up by $1 to $8.99 per month. The ad-free Standard plan that allows viewing on two devices simultaneously is going up by $2, from $17.99/month to $19.99/month.

Those who want to take advantage of their televisions' 4K/HDR/spatial audio functionality using Netflix's Premium plan will also be paying an extra $2 per month, increasing the monthly price from $24.99 to $26.99.

Any new members who sign up will have to pay the new prices immediately. Existing members will start paying more as the updated tiers roll out over the next few weeks.

Netflix says that existing members will be notified by email a month before the new prices are applied to them, with the timing depending on the individual member's billing cycle.

It was only January 2025 when Netflix last increased its prices. That update also saw the ad-supported tier increase by $1, while the other two plans went up by $2. The previous hike came in October 2023, which followed another in 2022.

As is always the case when any streamer increases its prices, Netflix has rolled out the excuse that these hikes reflect improvements to its "wide range of entertainment" and the quality of its service.

The streaming king has recently introduced video podcasts and more livestreaming content, and plans to redesign its mobile app as it pushes further into vertical content. But this latest increase is the eighth that Netflix has introduced to its Standard plan since it launched at $7.99 in November 2010. In just over 15 years, the price has increased 150%.

The hikes come soon after a new streaming-usage record was set in the United States on Christmas Day, spurred on by the final season of Stranger Things and the broadcast of NFL games.

It's just a matter of time until Disney/Hulu and the rest of the competition pull the trigger as well.

They all raise their prices once Netflix does it first.

Does Netflix have much worth watching these days? I’ve heard One Piece is pretty good and worth a watch, but is there anything else?

Bojack horseman was the last Netflix exclusive I watched. I watch it once a year. Usually when I'm off in the the winter, me and the wife will stock up booze, stay in bed, order take out, drink and binge watch it for a few days. That show will throw you threw ever set of emotions you have. Probably my favorite show of all time, but Star Trek Deep Space 9 and Stargate SG-1 are tied in the spot with it.

Isn't worth it. Its easier and cheaper to find more creative ways to watch media these days. It's not like they are putting anything worth watching. I find it easier to watch older shoes from my own collection.

As long as people pay and keep watching, they will keep raising prices. That is how the free market works. As soon as users feel the squeeze is no longer worth the juice, they will cancel and the more that cancel, over time, the streaming services will look at what brings the viewers back in. A show worth the squeeze or is it the cost is down and making the juice worth it again. Kinda like the data centers, as long as people pay more and more to keep the long list of videos and pictures they never view again in the cloud, the more data centers go in and the more the pricing goes up.

You got a streaming channel for that? Lots of freaks out there would probably log in to join you watching your shoes.

I dropped Netflix on their last price hike which was at the start of 2025 I believe.....I didn't realize I've been Netflix free for over a year. I don't miss it. Shows they had that I liked they turned into woke trash and then the series petered out. I'm so happy I'm not dishing out almost $300 a year on it anymore. I'll keep my money.

Oh well that was the last and only american streaming service I used....time to say good bye to you too. And welcome my self to gray area of Internet <3

I'll have to reevaluate to see if it's even worth it. I just binge watch at the moment, I work too much to be a couch potato. At best I watch maybe 1 or 2 movies a week. Will settle for the freebies like Tubi, Plex, or Pluto. It boils down to if Netflix provides any value to me.

I have been buying DVDs for 25 years, not stopping anytime soon. I rip them all to my plex server and have my own streaming service whenever I want, has my music there as well.
Best way to go. 1100+ movies on my plex server, along with 50 full TV series and a handful of partial TV series, such as The Simpsons. I only have seasons 1 thru 12, the good years of The Simpsons.

I've got physical copies of all my movies stashed away in storage and I keep buying DVD/Bluray discs when I can. I really do hate streaming services - pay to rent and some you have to pay to rent a movie while you're paying to rent the streaming service on top of it....what a rip.

Last time I used these fools, was when they would mail you a DVD movie disc. I've, been downloading what ever film I want for decades now. Free!!

As a copyright and patent holder I would never do that. After getting copyrights and patents on my own works I know how difficult it is to create something original and how expensive it can get once lawyers get involved.

Do you sell your art/music/movie/tv show in a digital format with no DRM in a decent quality for a reasonable price?

I usually wait until our local library has what I want to try watching, I'm in no hurry since there is not much innovative entertainment anymore. Taking an animated movie and making it live is not innovative to me, just another recycling of same-o, same-o.

This will just push more & more people just to start downloading via torrents again.
When they all 1st came out, they were "affordable" but with every price rise people will download

Ease vs Value proposition is starting to swing back in the direction of piracy...

Hoist the sails!
