New Affordable AMD B650 Motherboard Roundup

First let me thank you for all your hard work.

My question is related to new Zen 5 cpu's, are we expecting 125-350W parts only?

For me a "a more powerful AM5 processor in the future" can be a 9600x or 9800x 3D cache or not and if they keep it under 90W should be fine.

Cheers mate!
Of course that's not the expectation. The point is and I really can't make this any clearer than I already have, for the same money you can get boards that will easily run 200 watt CPUs, so spending the same money on 90-120 watt limit boards is silly and the products themselves need not exist, they're just a consumer trap. Why people are trying to make excuses for such products or come up with scenarios where they don't suck is beyond me.

As I said earlier if they were $80 US or less they might make sense, especially if the power limits were clearly indicated to the buyer.

Where is the coolest motherboard?

MSI B650M-PROJECT-ZERO

no cables on the front !!!

It's a $230+ US board, so not exactly a candidate for a budget board roundup.

The PC market is in shambles atm.

CPUs and GPUs are using more power than they should. x86 is dead (my opinion) lets not restart that whole debacle. I get it, gaming is the key for most users here, however, at what cost. Intel is a mess with their latest offerings and AMD is catching up, it isn't going to get better, only hotter. Not to mention the costs of these space heaters.

This whole process needs an enema.

Not to mention that it has a very limited amount of compatible cases (due to some connections being on the bottom of the MB). Most are in the $160-$200 range, so again not very conducive to a budget build, other than the MSI MAG PANO M100R PZ mATX case ($110). It is a cool looking board though.

My cheap board from 2011 has like 50 usb ports and more audio holes... why all of these have so few? They even cost 135+... this is why I got a 450 bucks board for my 7800X3D. The cheap options are literally bare-bones. That was not the case for my i5-2500k.

The only way I could use all my USB devices from 2011 was to buy an expensive board. Going cheap would kill half of the things I currently use. Many new boards only have 4 SATA ports too...Most boards pre 2017 used to have like 6-8. So what? I should not use my drives cus suddenly they felt like we dont need Sata ports anymore? I could make them USB drives, but again... there are too few USB ports. There is no optical audio too, on most boards, or 5.1 setups. They are only sold in the super expensive motherboards, something I used to have for 65 DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways, I know we are living in the future. All my complaints are cus I got older tech, which is still perfectly working. It's good enough for me too. It's like Windows 11 again. MS told us that we can't upgrade our amazing computers from 2017 cus they are just old and useless now. I don't think so. I use my old laptop and PC daily, works AMAZINGLY well in 2024, but can't be upgraded to W11. Cus buy new tech yo. I guess im the stupid 1, I need to just use 2TB SSDS for storage. We all know how good SSD's are for storage, right? I mean, that and also how cost effective... ;p Just give us boards with 0 Sata/USB ports, do it, I dare ya!!

P.s. My $450 board after 11 bios updates still boots for 3-4m. All settings are set, fast boot, in bios stuff, ram speeds. That bug still plagues many people on the forums, not just me. Anyways, At least 7800X3D drains like 35-40 W during gaming, totally magical CPU.

To be honest, most new builds these days aren't using SATA drives at all, it's moved to M.2 nVME SSDs - faster and affordable; priced about the same. Personally I don't know anyone that needs more than than the provided USB ports - most of these MBs have at least a dozen USB ports, the ASRock B650M Pro RS for instance has 17. If you need more than that, buy some hubs. As far as optical audio connections go, the I'd say the majority of people don't even know what they are. So you're complaining that all this "old tech" you used to be able to buy for $65 isn't available on new motherboards anymore, well that's just how technology goes. It sounds like you're more upset that your older systems can't be upgraded to Win11 and while I do find that a legitimate complaint, it sounds more like sour grapes than anything.

I did not say is the cheaper I say is the coolest:)))
Anyway I know now thanks for this nice tests B650M DS3H and aorus elite are in my top 5 inc. msi 0 so when I will upgrade | will see these

Ohhh... I had the wrong impression. I was under the belief that these boards were a good deal less expensive than their contemporaries (or at least it seemed that way).

If they're similar in price, then please disregard everything I said because I totally misunderstood. You're 100% right Steve!

(...as usual). 😉👍

No worries, from the article...

"The rest, though, there isn't much more that needs to be said; they're all bad. If the Gigabyte B650M D3HP, for example, was $80, we might go a bit easier on it, but sadly none of these boards are particularly cheap. They cost as much or more than the Asrock B650M-HDV, and they're all significantly worse, so they simply need not exist.

Now, you might be thinking, those boards would work well with a Ryzen 5 or maybe even a Ryzen 7 part, and that's probably true. But one of the big draw cards of the AM5 platform is upgradeability, and while you might buy a Ryzen 7 7700 now, there's a reasonable chance you could end up with a future generation Ryzen 9. So having the ability to upgrade to any AM5 processor in the future is obviously a good thing.

Moreover, as we just pointed out, there are already affordable boards such as the B650M-HDV, DS3H, or B650M-A WiFi that can handle Ryzen 9 processors, so obviously just buy one of those."
