New GTA 6 gameplay just leaked, and Rockstar can't take it down fast enough

Cutting corners: Fewer than 100 days remain until the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, one of the most anticipated video games of all time, and developer Rockstar has released virtually no gameplay footage. A week before the first officially scheduled gameplay demonstration, an anonymous leaker has released the sandbox game's biggest leak since 2022.

Two low-resolution clips attributed to an X account calling itself CyberLeek appear to show previously unseen gameplay from GTA 6. Although the footage lasts only a couple of minutes, Take-Two's rapid but ultimately ineffective copyright takedowns suggest the clips are genuine.

One clip shows Jason, one of the game's two playable characters, playing a basketball minigame at a house seen in prior trailers. Movement in GTA 6 appears to resemble Red Dead Redemption 2, and a "Focus" stat that rises with each made shot suggests the game includes RPG-like mechanics.

Another video shows Jason driving before colliding with a truck and getting into a fight with its driver. The clip shows Jason using a wrench as a melee weapon, a stamina meter, and a wanted meter that goes up to six stars instead of GTA 5's five. A separate AI-generated video showing the second playable character, Lucia, is also circulating.

CyberLeek also leaked what's said to be GTA 6's entire world map. Similar to its predecessor, GTA 6 is set on a large island containing a large city surrounded by several smaller towns and wilderness. The leaker, who is also using the leak to promote a cryptocurrency token, plans to release more material imminently but claims to be rate-limited.

The leak is the biggest breach against Take-Two and Rockstar since a hacker shared over 90 videos and screenshots in 2022. Prominent leaker NateTheHate claims the new footage is over a year old, likely from 2024, so while much has probably changed since it was recorded, it still represents the latest build shown publicly.

Thus far, trailers containing tiny gameplay snippets with cinematic camera angles are the only GTA 6 footage Rockstar has officially released. An extended look at the game will debut on Netflix on August 27, six hours before it hits YouTube.

Grand Theft Auto VI will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles on November 19. The Standard Edition carries an $80 MSRP, while the Ultimate Edition is priced at $100. CyberLeek says it shared the footage partly to protest what it calls Rockstar's move toward a digital-only release, along with Sony's plans to cease manufacturing physical discs for PlayStation games after January 2028. A PC version is expected at a (much) later date.

Former Rockstar employees who accused the company of union-busting have asked fans not to boycott the game, but instead to purchase a custom T-shirt to support the group's legal battle against the developer.

I bought an Xbox Series X before they raised prices $100, right before I left for Vietnam this summer, so I'd be ready for this game. I sure hope it lives up to the hype.

I, for one, am not so psyched about this game, not with Dan Houser gone
I don't get it either. Rockstar games are interesting sandboxes, and that's the end of the good things I can say about them. Their missions are absolute rubbish, they are so extremely on-rails I don't understand how anyone can enjoy that kind of thing. Feels like the game is constantly treating me like a toddler, "go here and watch this cutscene", "now get into this specific car and drive here", "park in this specific spot", "stand in this spot and shoot at this guy", "you walked 5 metres away from the spot you were supposed to be standing on, so mission failed".

Rockstar games are solidly into "games for people who don't like games" category. It's just a mildly interactive movie with zero player agency. The hype is so mismatched with the quality of the product.

Not a GTA fan myself, but as the franchise is played by millions every day with undiminished delight, they are clearly doing the right things in terms of game design. So, I would ascribe it to a matter of taste.

It's more the multiplayer aspect of the game that draws people for the GTA 5.

I tried it and found it tedious; not just with the mediocre game play (single player was bland with a boring story, content and gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I thought GTA 3 was great, but that's where it ended with me - everything after GTA 3 has been a downhill), but with all the people dropping in with their cheats it felt like I was in a multiplayer version of Saints Row 4.

Some people like that kind of thing in GTA5, but I don't. There is nothing Rockstar can do to make a GTA game appealing to me. I'm not their demographic so I know they're not trying to appease me and me not buying a copy of their game doesn't impact their business.

Hopefully those that get GTA6 enjoy it, but at the same time I hope it flops so this slop stops getting pushed out over and over again.

Mcdonalds sells the most burgers. Doesn't mean they are quality cuisine. Rather, it's "food for people who don't like food".

Good points. I'm out of touch but how does multiplayer work in GTA?

Never fancied the series and only played a bit of Vice City back in 2004 on the friend's computer.

Fair argument. Having said that, excellence sometimes reaches mass appeal: for example, RE Requiem.

Yes GTA is such a U.S. tailored game... they should do London,Rome,Tokyo much more interesting cities...we have seen the same thing multiple times. Anyhow not interested on American guns or cars...
