New World disallows 'Amazon' and 'Bezos' as character names

WTF?! If, like so many people, the first thing you plan to do when playing Amazon's New World is to call your character "Jeff Antichrist Bezos," you're out of luck—and not because someone else got there first. Amazon won't allow you to use its founding father's name, variations of it, or anything with the word "Amazon," essentially putting the terms in the same category as swear words.

PC Gamer's Morgan Park found that "JeffB," "Bez0s," and "Be Zos" are all banned from New World. Instead of the usual "This name is in use" message, indicating that another player is using the same handle, they bring up a "cannot be used" warning, the same one shown when typing in profanity. That puts Bezos on the same level as, say, "Goblin McF**kface."

Surprisingly, it appears that Amazon never covered all the variations—somebody is using "Beff Jezos."

Amazon isn't the first company to implement this sort of rule. Users can't call themselves "Blizzard" in World of Warcraft, though variations of the name work.

Back in July, Bezos stepped down as Amazon CEO to become the executive chair of the company's Board of Directors, with Andy Jassy taking on the chief executive role. The move has given the world's richest man more time to fly around in his definitely-not-phallic-shaped rocket. Illustrating the love people have for the man, over 200,000 people signed a petition demanding he not be allowed to return to earth.

Amazon's inability to laugh at itself and its creator hasn't impacted the game's popularity. New World was already Steam's most-wishlisted game and now sits at number one on its top-sellers chart. And in all fairness, the tech giant will likely say banning the Amazon username prevents scammers from tricking people into thinking they're admins. No excuse for banning Bezos' name, though—maybe it was at the billionaire's behest.

I've played games where even the word "update" gets blocked as a swear word... but... is the game actually any good?

I haven’t played release yet, but the beta was pretty darn fun. Fingers crossed it’s not a flop.
I got 6 hours yesterday. The game is beyond fun! Brings me back to when I was playing at 15yrs WOW. But now more mature gameplay and graphics are amazing on my RTX3070 I got at MSRP ::pawn intended::. Many servers had queues, my buddy was queued 400+ and waited 2 hours. Some had over 6k players in queue and waiting for hours.

What are we gonna do without the traditional clown/goofball name of Bozo in the plural?
Hmm. how about Bezo?
Never mind....

So what? Haven't you noticed that there are no hurricanes named "David"?

There is "Daniel", "Dolores" or "Douglas" but not "David". Why? Because one (extremely rich and powerful) minority don't want their favorite name to be used in a negative context. They don't wanna hear on TV News:

"David has destroyed 185,000 homes and killed 25,000 people. David is the worst thing that happened to Florida in the last 50 years."

So, they've used their financial and political power to prohibit the usage of name "David" for tropical cyclones (and any other nasty phenomenons). Isn't that discrimination? Yes, it definitely is. Why would it be okay to name a hurricane "Enrique" but not "David"? Shouldn't all the Enriques in the Altantic and Pacific region complain about discrimination? They should.

But you don't hear mass media ever mentioning that.

Probably because what you posted was a lie?

Yeah, that was in 1979. One and only time. After that the name was retired. There were no more hurricanes named "David" in the recent 40 years. The name has been permanently removed from the list of names of tropical cyclones.

So, a cyclone can be (and will be) named "Douglas" but not "David".
Yes... but it WAS used... and then it was retired because of the terrible devastation it caused - not because someone didn't want the name used... MANY names have been retired from the "storm list"...
