Nintendo hits another ROM site with a copyright infringement lawsuit

What just happened? Nintendo went after two ROM-hosting websites last year, but that wasn't the end of its quest against such sites. The Japanese gaming giant has filed a lawsuit against RomUniverse, seeking millions of dollars for copyright and trademark infringement.

Nintendo has a reputation for aggressively protecting its IPs and will use the law where it can. In July last year, it launched a lawsuit against two ROM sites—loveROMs and loveRETRO.co—and in November the site owners reached a $12 million settlement with the company.

Now, Polygon reports that Nintendo has once again taken legal action against a ROM site. This time, the target is RomUniverse, which reportedly offers memberships for $30 per year that allows users to download “an unlimited number of pirated games, [referred to as ROMs,] with higher speeds than non-members.”

Nintendo’s lawsuit alleges that RomUniverse is one of the most popular and notorious online hubs for its pirated games, with nearly 300,000 Nintendo Switch game downloads and “more than 500,000” downloads for Nintendo 3DS games.

Nintendo is seeking $150,000 in damages for each copyright infringement, along with $2 million for every trademark infringement. With over 60,000 ROMs available to download, the potential total damages should have the site operators worried.

It’s not just ROM sites that Nintendo has issues with. Last month saw the company go after YouTube channels that upload music from its catalog of games. GilvaSunner, a channel that’s been around since 2010 and has almost 348,000 subscribers, was hit with hundreds of copyright strikes from the firm.

Load up on these classics while u can.

They are going after these guys so they can release all these games on their own switch platform and online service.

Smart business move imo. There are a lot of techie people that are using emulation to continue to enjoy these classics without the needed hardware. The demand will still be there when they remove all avenues of obtaining these roms. That will equal more switch sales and online service activations.

Once they add N64 and cube games to the switch service as free or even pay to play. Im a day 1 buyer

I've always loved Nintendo but they do go way too far on this crap. They're obviously trying to limit people's nostalgia so they can provide it at a price later.

How come Nintendo just doesn't sell ROM's themselves? Get with the times
They want to keep them on their platform but don't want to update them to work on modern platforms, even if through emulation. Sites will continue to pop up and get brought down by Nintendo, but they'll never get rid of it entirely.

Well, you can play n64 games via retroarch on the switch at 1080p providing you have a little know how and can follow a guide.

The problem is they gave up nes snes . the sale of consoles in 80 s and 90 and a little into 20xx they didnt care anymore about small consoles. so now they are gonna take back the little ones and we must pay for roms. they could just make games on roms for consoles. that wa are pirates thats wrong. when nitendo sega atari jaguar and so on gave up their console we was abandoned to find tools and old consoles like lovely dreamcast sega mega and alll extras to consoles,
if they want to put some £$ on them now would be nice.
if they remake games for every console and o.c sony dreamcast makes cd versions and extras for snes nes comes out for a bit €$ to buy.
this was bad for those who wanted to buy more nes sega snes games.
when atari said they did not want too support gaming anymore the lay a ungolden egg.

nitendo want credit for their work ok FINE . but about 40 years later thats (coco) .)
retro gaming will die if they do like this and people wil ban nitendo consoles and so on.
now a deal with not selling roms but only retali games for console would be nice for collectors.
gaming on pc is just not like tha same.
yeah getting som usb to n64 gamecube snes nes but the time it start up and gvies you sun in eies and want too play it on real consoles would fall away.
nitendo classic snes c sega c are nice to get hold of before nitendo would take all down.
so nitendo tink before yeah do something bad. rom sites have lived longer then youre console ever will.
taking care of US P.I.R.A.T.E.S. or stand against us all. who would loose that battle ?

they do sell their old classic games but the way they do it sucks. If you buy it on your wii, its stuck on the wii itself. Did you sell or throw your wii away...too bad you lost it. It sucks. I rather download them instead and play them when I can. I would be glad to open an account on Nintendo website, pay and download certain games in the style of Steam for example.
