No Sound on Dell Optiplex with Soundmax audio

i am totally new to this and am not a computer whizz at all..i need help with my dell optiplex gx280...when trying to litens to music or watch anything i do not have any sound at all..i went into control panel and nothing is muted is says my default sound devixe is Soundmax digital audio, i also pressed f2 when the dell screen came up to check that BIOS but i couldnt change anything and i was unsure if i needed to do anything with it..its really bugging me now have no sound and wondered if there is anything i could do via the computer or shall i jsut go and buy speakers!!??
