Within the past week both norton antiv_i_r u s and task manager will appear for a fraction of a second when i try to open them, then close. Also any program where i type the word "v i r u s" without spaces, including this post, will close whenever i click submit or ok or whatever. I have run both Norton's online scan and one by trend micro and no v i r u s e s were found. Please help me.

I can't believe people use Norton. EVERY where I see it there's "magically" problems with the computer.

Here's a tip, download AVG Anti-Virus:

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Download that. It's the best Free one that I've found and works wonderfully :) Uninstall Snorton before you install this.

Also, download the update once you install it to get the latest virus definitions.

i tried downloading that program but whatever it is on my computer closes that as well immediately after i open it. Also i have noticed several programs in my "My music" folder that werent there before. They keep coming back after i delete them. They are all 65.5 kb.
Counter-Strike Condition Zero Keygen
Deus Ex Invisible War NO CD Crack
Doom 3 NO CD Crack
Half-Life 2 Keygen
Half-Life 2 NO CD Crack
Hidden & Dangerous 2 NO CD Crack
Jedi Academy NO CD Crack
Max Payne 2 NO CD Crack

all are .exe iles

Have you tried running Ad-Aware or SpyBot S&D?

I know they're not anti-virus solutions, but they might help anyways...

BTW: How did you manage to write "virus" if every window in which that is written is closed? (In the double post)

BTW: How is your internet connection? Really busy even if you're not using the net?

It could very well be that your computer has been hacked by a black hat who uses it to host files...

If so, try to install ZoneAlarm and run the programs I listed above....

i have run both adaware and spybot, and removed everything it came up with. I can type v i r u s in anywindow, but once i click submit or ok or something like that, it closes. i tried searching for v i r u s and when i click search, it closes the browser.

my internet connection does not appear that busy at all, but im not sure how to tell exactly.

I will try zone alarm and then re run programs

i have the file dowloaded, but cannot install it. It seems as if the v irus or t rojan or whatever it is is not present in safe mode, but windows installer will not run in safe mode so i cannot install it. i also tried diagnostic startup using the system configuration utility, but then the program opens then quickly closes as always. i had installed zonealarm as recommended earlier, but i believe i was having the same problem with being unable to run it

also with the avg anit v i rus, the program installed successfully, but when i try to update it tryies to close repatedly with a prompt asking me if i'm sure i want to cancel the download, appearing hundreds of times until i retstart the computer. as with everything else, trying to run the actual program results in it closing immediately

another thing, i receive the message titled "16 bit MS-DOS subsystem" with message c:\windows\system32\command.com
c:\progra~1\\symantec\s32evnt1.dll. An installable virtual device driver failed dll initialization. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
If i choose ignore, everything seems to work tho, not sure if its related

Sounds to me like you have a Virus that is disabling your AV software as well as task manager and other stuff as well(pretty common of recent virii) You need to try to figure out what virus you have and follow the removal procedure.

PS: Doesn't matter which AV you have, if it isn't up to date, it isn't going to work.

Rename command.com (as you mentioned above) to command.old or somthing.
Do the same with the other file you linked...

As for the writing VIRUS...
Then when you posted the other thread, your browser was closed? Because in that topic it said VIRUS and not V I R U S.... (I allways get a bit suspicious when someone writes a line saying "I can't write 'virus', because then my program closes" but I won't press too hard on the matter...)

When in safemode, how about creating a new account, which is a poweruser (so you can install things)...
Then go into the default users dir of Documents And Settings, and remove everything from the startup folder...
This should limit how many programs your new user will have running at startup...

Also try to download msconfig, (There's a thread about it on this board somewhere), and uncheck anything that looks or sounds suspicious... (This when you're using the new account)
After that, restart, and try to install the diff programs suggested above...

Hope this helps :)

i have run msconfig and unchecked absolutely everything, nothing got loaded, and the viru s was still there. i will try new account.

the other thread got posted but i am unable to view it because it continually closes, as it did right after i submitted it

Do you have anything important? If so, back it up (if you can) and reformat the sucker.

Old technique but works like a charm ;)

Type in stinger in google then download and run the latest release. This cured this problem when i had it. Good luck

Shiney, nice! Guess that might be just what I need to fix an old box I've got standing in the office :)

mint> Ah, then I understand... Sorry for being so suspicious, but another board I visit had a lot of hoaxes recently...

You can find stinger here, with the latest release being from 21 dec...

Or download it directly from here if you have any problems with the page

I am not sure if this will work, but have you tried to run the virus check from the symantec web site. if it detects anything you "may" be able to download a remover from the same site, but not sure if it will work OK bearing in mind your other probs,

tried that stinger thing, didnt seem to work, do i need to try in safe mode?
I tried the symantec online scan, came up empty.

Just thought I'd mention about the files that came from nowhere in the my music folders. There are a number of virii out there that are aimed at p2p because that is unfortunately one of the easiest ways of spreading them. Anything that says 'keygen', 'serial', or 'crack' that just appears from nowhere is quite likely due to a virus, basicaly because those are some of the most downloaded items in the software section of Kazaa. Sad, but true. If they are deleted, some virii will recreate them. Sometimes they can be gotten rid of permanently by removing registry entries, but not always. Also, most virii these days only run in the Win32 environment. If you can set up an AV to scan before Windows boots, you can sometimes get rid of it that way. In this case I'm not sure what to do though. It may well be that a format is required.

well thanks anyways, but unfortunately format is difficult because i have lots of school provided (and expensive) software preinstalled, not to mention no xp disk.
