notebook failure at startup

Hi,

My father in laws notebook gave an error message:

\windows\system32\config\system

Its a Sony vaio preinstalled XP
The data on the disk needs to be saved, education data.

Trying to startup normally resolves in a new setup of XP, just like the first time when he bought the notebook.

Searched the MS database site but the solution is only for non-OEM systems
Who can provide me the information to solve this error.

All notebooks come with an OS restore utility. This includes your Sony Vaio. Look in your All Programs section carefully... This restore utility may have options to save data or destroy data, so be careful.

Another option is to do an XP repair, but you will need an XP install disc. An XP repair won't destroy your data... You can find instructions here:
