20th Century history notwithstanding, Germany is the only country in Europe with any money, but that doesn't explain why the citizens are being watched.

The NSA will continue to monitor Germany because of WW1, WW2, the Cold War.
those who forgot the past will repeat the same mistakes and America is not going to be caught sleeping again. (except 9.11.2001)

Well, sort of. The cold war was primarily between Russia and the US. However, East Germany was a strong Russian presence and encompassed half of greater Germany. Doping scandals, (before it was really fashionable to dope), abounded from East Germany, and athletic excellence or a par with Russia proper, was an arm of the Soviet propaganda machine.

Yup, that's about right! I'm from Poland, and we were (still kinda are due to wanky politics) under plenty of influence from Russians, but extending Germany's "sin list" to Cold War is a little rash, I think. I always considered East Germany as an extension of Russia, and blaming it for Cold War is a little far-fetched... but hey, it's a minor detail, not worth arguing about. :) Glad that you cleared that up a bit though.
