Ntdll.dll explorer.exe problem

Hi.
For about the last week I have been having a problem.
Every time I run a search for files containing text, and then access the results, one or two times into accessing the results I get a Windows error saying there is a problem with explorer.exe;
app ver 6.0.2900.3156
mod name ntdll.dll
mod ver 5.1.2600.3520
offset (various)

After I click OK the taskbar disappears for a moment, and then all the icons reappear, except the result of my search is gone. Other programs seem fine.

Please note this is NOT Internet Explorer (I use Firefox for browsing anyway) but explorer.exe.
I don't get any blue screens or anything, and as I say the only thing that seems affected is that I lose my search.

I am on Win XP Pro SP 2 - as far as I can tell all essential patches have been applied.
Intel CPU, Acer Travelmate 4050 about 5 years old.
I have up-to-date virus checker (Avira); neither this, nor SpybotSD nor Malawarebytes flag any problems. (I did have A-squared on my system until recently when my subscription expired I did not renew it).
I've tried reboots; just ran chkdsk c: /f; tried the DEP workaround I've seen suggested in some places; none of these help.

Any help would really be appreciated!
