Ntoskrnl question

I have read previous posts concerning an error message on my desktop that reads; Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt or missing. I noted in previous solutions that indicate I should go to the HP recovery disks, however my machine does nothing except gives a black screen with the indicated error. I have input the recovery disk and nothing happens. All I get is the black screen with the error message. Booting up the machine in Safe Mode does nothing. From solutions provided on this board I am led to believe my hard drive has been rendered useless?????

If you suspect the harddrive and you have a friend who has some tech knowledge, you can slave your harddrive in another system and run harddrive diagnostics from that system.
