Nvidia and AMD's next gaming GPUs could be delayed until 2028, because AI pays better

Connecting the dots: Nvidia's RTX 60 series Rubin GPUs and most of AMD's RDNA 5-based Radeon 10000 series gaming cards have reportedly been pushed back to 2028. The delay would come down to persistent AI demand, which continues to make data center hardware far more profitable than consumer products.

Responding to a forum question about the release timing for Nvidia and AMD's next-generation graphics cards, the generally reliable leaker Kepler_L2 said on the AnandTech forums that nearly the entire stack from both companies is now expected to arrive in 2028, as AI accelerator demand keeps eating into available capacity. The lone exception is AMD's "AT2" GPU, still reportedly on track to launch next year.

Kepler_L2's post appears to directly contradict a recent report from YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead, which claimed Nvidia was gearing up to launch its next-gen RTX 60 series – including the flagship RTX 6090 – in the first half of 2027. Kepler_L2 dismissed the claim outright.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Tweakers in June, several of AMD's board partners said they had little clarity on the release window for the next-generation cards. Some expected shipments to begin by mid-to-late 2027; others said availability could slip into early 2028.

Neither Nvidia nor AMD has said much publicly about its next-generation gaming GPUs, but rumors point to the so-called AT2 as an RDNA 5-based die with 8 Shader Engines, each carrying 5 Compute Units, for 40 Compute Units in total. It's expected to power an upper-midrange card, possibly with 12GB of VRAM on a 192-bit memory bus.

AT2 could end up going up against Nvidia's current GeForce RTX 5080, a step up from AMD's existing flagship, the Radeon RX 9070 XT, which trades blows with the mid-range RTX 5070 Ti. All of this, though, comes from unverified third-party sources and should be treated as such.

Nvidia has already shown off its Vera Rubin "Superchip" for AI data centers, but has stayed quiet on the consumer side. AMD hasn't said much about RDNA 5 either, though an earlier Kepler_L2 leak claimed the flagship Navi 5X GPU could hit clock speeds of up to 3.4GHz, with 12,288 cores and 32GB of GDDR7 memory.

I'm actually fine with this. Game developers need to stop just throwing in fancy graphics instead of competing on gameplay. This will slow development down so you could buy a GPU today and expect it to last a good while.

It's like Epic might have to actually start working on optimizing UE5

It's not like they release GTA VI for pc before 2028. So not releasing new GPU's until then is not an issue.
If my current 3070 dies on me until then I still have the 2060 and the 1060 somewhere in the attic.

So...We have have a firm possability of a definite maybe!

Why is this unfounded rumor, and grand amatuer speculation even a story?

...But worry not because it's a lot less better than it never wasn't before!

Yikes

What needs to stop is AI development. Its a loaded gun pointed at everyone's head, wielded by drunk teenagers with far too much capitol and not enough common sense.
Hate to break it to you but nothing will stop AI development. Not government intervention, not protesting, and certainly not randos of the internet crying about it. This stuff is basically like crack to investors. It reminds of Bitcoin in its prime when everyone was buying into it because the sky was the limit. Every investor is going to be a billionaire from AI just like they were from investing in Bitcoin.

Seriously, stopping AI or even slowing it down is as likely as cutting back on fossil fuels to save the earth. Everyone will keep talking about like it's a huge deal and exactly nothing substantive will be done in the end. All the greedy investors are so addicted to it, there's just no stopping it considering the staggering amount of money involved.

And this nonsense about AI destroying civilization is laughable nonsense. Oh no, Claude or whomever hacked into our systems. Maybe build systems without Swiss cheese security. This all sounds like the alarmist fear mongering garbage in the late 90's. Oh no, we'll never make it to the year 2000. Every computer will explode due to Y2K!

I honestly think they delaying the release on purpose because if they release new hardware that's much better at AI now all the others AI data centers depreciat quicker and will lead to the bubble popping sooner.

This has been planned from the beginning, normally GPUs 2 year release that you got 80% better performance every generation would mean by year 6 after 3 generation the AI data center build 6 years ago would have depreciated pretty badly, especially if they haven't even recouped the money for the hardware yet.

They had to slow down releases and performance gains to keep the prices high.

What could slow down is AI adoption, though. Easing the pressure on hardware demand.

Hat to break it to you but the vast majority of AI spending is just going down the toilet and most investors will lose their money

Do not buy GPUs, keep your money, reduce your backlog.
There are so many great games we own, or can buy at a ridiculous price, that use 2D or light 3D graphics and will perfectly run on most hardware.
It's time to start enjoying gameplay instead of photorealistic graphics.
