Nvidia says the RTX 5090 isn't discontinued, but most listings are over $9,300

Why it matters: Reports of the RTX 5090's death may have been exaggerated. That's according to Nvidia, which recently confirmed that the flagship consumer card was still in production. However, that denial doesn't seem to line up with Nvidia's own US marketplace, where the RTX 5090 is conspicuously absent.

Prolific leaker MEGAsizeGPU last week wrote that Nvidia had "confirmed" the GB202 chip used in the RTX 5090 would no longer be used in new RTX 5090 cards. Instead, future supplies of the GPU would be used exclusively for RTX Pro Blackwell-based models.

Another leaker, Hongxing2020, said Nvidia would replace the RTX 5090 with a new RTX 5080 variant packing 24GB of VRAM.

Now, 4Gamers reports that Nvidia has denied the reports at an RTX Spark launch party event in Taipei, Taiwan.

Jeff Fisher, Nvidia's senior vice president of personal computing, talked about CUDA and how there would be no AI market today without it.

"The supply chain (capacity) is indeed somewhat constrained, but NVIDIA is fully committed to bringing products to market. Although there are other variants of the RTX 5090 chip, it has not been discontinued, and Nvidia will continue shipping, which is very important," Fisher said, according to the machine-translated site.

That all sounds pretty definitive, but it's at odds with Nvidia's official US marketplace. The option to see RTX 5090 cards has been removed completely, with the RTX 5080 sitting at the top of the list.

There are some RTX 5090 cards available on Newegg. The majority are over $9,300, with the most expensive model priced at $10,899. Amazon has just one, priced at $11,565. It ships from Germany in 2 to 3 weeks. There are almost none sitting on shelves in brick-and-mortar stores, either.

As for the RTX 5080 24GB, or Super, as it might be called, there are rumors it will launch next year. It's long been assumed that the Super series has been canceled, but there have been claims that it could land next year – or even sooner.

With the RTX 6000 series not expected until 2028 and rival AMD's RDNA 5 cards tipped to get here in late 2027, perhaps Nvidia will launch an RTX 5080 Super at some point, though we can only hazard a guess at its price.

As we all know, the situation comes down to the massive demand for AI products and the fact Nvidia makes a lot more money from these expensive professional and enterprise cards. Despite Fisher's claims, it wouldn't be a surprise to learn that the RTX 5090 is effectively dead.

I am so thankful that I have my 5090 and both my cousins do as well.

That said: the 5090 will become impossible to buy because they are stripping the cards and adding VRAM to make them more suitable for AI.

A 5080 24GB to me is a slap in the face. They could have just as easily made the 5080 a competitive card by giving it 24GB in the first place and thereby allowing it to be better than the 4090. To wait all this time, resisting buying a 5090, while prices shot up because one anticipated the 5080 and 5090 super being released is just hubris.

It's not discontinued, they're just allocating all their does to GPUs like the RTx 6000 and datacenter hardware. They aren't "discontinuing" them, they just currently aren't ordering any new stock

Also new rtx 5500 pro which is same gb202 chip and cores as 5090 only more vram, and minus hdmi cable at 5x the margins probably if not higher.

Also if those desperate and interested prebuilts are still available cheaper than scalped at about $7200 to $7499 fyi.

The only RTX 5090 at my local Micro Center that I'm aware of is a ROG Astral Edition 20. You cannot purchase the GPU alone, it must be purchased in some stupid ROG bundle. The total cost of the bundle is looking to be $11,800 (after tax) for whatever all comes in that bundle.

The 5080 cards are going for around $1600 to $2100. Even the lowest priced 5080 is double the cost I got my 3080Ti for when it was NIB from Micro Center.

Huge GDDR shortages so to solve the problem Nvidious release a 24GB 5080. The deck chair rearranging is complete Captain.

Last week their prebuilts were selling for $7499. Now it's $8999 for the same prebuilts over night. 😱
