One in six Windows PCs still runs Windows 10, and the vulnerabilities are piling up

Windows 10 still has security updates, those updates just got extended to Oct of 2027. I consider Microsoft's handling of windows 11 updates a larger vulnerability than my windows 10 not getting feature updates any more. I get all sorts of messed up windows 11 pcs in the shop directly after patch Tuesday and it's been this way for a couple years now.
It's actually been closer to a couple of decades since "patch Tuesday", hasn't been disastrous for Windows users. I still remember when "dreaded Tuesday", involved a complete re-installation of the Win 10 OS..! There was a chorus of whimpering and whining, the likes of, "what about those who have slow internet", and, "but I don't have unlimited data, so I get charged for M$ trashing my machine once a month." They finally relented on that, along with a "public service announcement", to the tune of, "see, look at all we're doing for you", "we hear you, blah, blah, blah".

Face facts, every "brand new" Windows version at the time of its release, is at best, a beta release_full stop. At their core, it's an experiment to determine how much of M$'s horse sh!t the gullible faction of their consumer base will put up with. With 10, we got ads, along with very close to mandatory trips to the M$ store.

With 11, we, (but not me), got keyloggers and AI, along with #10's "advancements". Such as software incompatibility, and a base price increase

M$ relies on the gullible, status conscious, fearful, and numbskulls, to further their agenda of pure greed and corporate interest.

NOW, even if we discount YouTube "influencers", self interests greed, and need for clicks, if you troll the videos, you won't find anything even remotely praising Windows 11. They'll tell you it's a "piece of sh!t". Frankly, I'm inclined to agree with their every word.

To be perfectly blunt, it's self, (and PC), destructive to entertain any version of Windows before the notice of its impending retirement.

JMO.....Cheers..!

They're probably making bank on extended support to corporations who don't want to upgrade.
Dear most exulted, (but seldom heard from anymore) and glorious Prince, you're absolutely correct. M$ is "making bank", on extended support for 10.

In point of fact, the YoY price for it has doubled from Win 7 ES. IIRC, Windows 7's charges for ES were, $25.00, $50.00, and either $75.00 or $100.00 for year three..!

Windows 10 ES kicks off with $50.00, first year.

(Feel free to check on that.) With me pushing 80, my short term memory is nearing useless. But my long term is, (mostly), intact.

Kudos, Props, and Cheers, from your loyal servant, CC.

I didn't move my main systems to Windows 10 until 2019. I ran Windows 7 until then and by 2019 there were tools that let me remove most of the unwanted stuff from windows 10. I also run a backup of files weakly with a system image monthly so any screw ups on microsoft's part and I am up and running again in around an hour of my time. Luckily for me my main systems will skip Windows 11 entirely and just move onto Linux as my main OS. Zorin has been more than stable for me in testing over the last 2 years and I can do 95% of what I want and need to do in the OS with even more control over things than I get out of 10 or 11. I will keep a couple of offline installs of windows 10 around mainly for gaming so I don't have to mess with compatibility layers for the older games I like to play.

I'd expect nothing less from humans.
No one should be shocked by this.
I find it quite entertaining to compare the vast differences in human and animal behavioral, "methodology" if you will, to accomplish the same results

For example, if a male lion wants to retain or gain territory, he has to fight another male, potentially to the death.

Should a human "landlord" want to expand their territory, (ostensibly) for perhaps, "gentrification", all he or she has to do is, find another landlord in distress, promise to pay back a bank the money he needs to borrow, raise the rent until the poor souls inhabiting said property, to the point where they can no longer afford it. Then they either move, or don't pay and get themselves evicted. So now, either he or she, can proclaim themselves, "king, (or queen), of the urban jungle". No bloodshed (usually), is involved..Oh sure, the occasional sheriff or constable may take a few 9 mil rounds. But that's not the land>"lord's"< problem, now is it?

While we have to buy, register, and obtain insurance, to operate motor vehicles, all the neighborhood cat or dog has to do is piss on the tires, and it's (tacitly), "theirs". So, next time you're out cruising the interstate, take the time to thank our furry friends for "allowing" you to borrow that shiny status SUV

Our closest relatives, the chimpanzee, have been observed waging wars against competing chimp tribes. (Ostensibly for the same reasons we do, territory.) Either that, or they have something to hide in the Epstein files as well (But I digress).

They do have 99+% of our DNA, albeit with an extra chromosome. Mercifully, and for appearances sake, we can't interbreed, since the male of our species will bang damned near any old (slotted or otherwise), thing on two legs.

I think it was Rod Serling who never said, "picture this if you will":

You're at a club, drunk to the point of the load being, "legendary". Then you spy "Ms right", briefly court her, and drag her home to your parent's basement. You sober up a bit, and "harmlessly" ask her, "dear god woman, don't you ever shave your legs?" No female can take that level of humiliation and abuse, so she rather petulantly and rudely, rips off your face.

How quickly problems multiply. You'll have to explain why you were in the club at age 19. Then worry if your parent's health insurance will cover your whole missing face thing. Simultaneously you try to pack it in ice while calling for an Uber. Meanwhile hoping that the closest hospital isn't closed due to bankruptcy. And lastly, wondering which, if any, of the legion of ambulance chasers you've seen on TV, will take your case against the local gin joint, under the auspices that the chimp was underage as well, and shouldn't have been served (either).

If there's any saving grace to this sordid affair, it's the fact that you're not rich, famous, or running for political office. Thus, there's no point to, or tentative gain, for her to sue you claiming, "sexual harassment".

Here's hoping you at least get a tiny chuckle out of this stream of consciousness attempt at humor. Cheers...!

Disclaimer: No humans or chimpanzees were harmed in the writing of this farce. As a work of fiction, no relation to persons living, dead, or with missing faces, was expressed or implied. Being completely off topic, was purely accidental and out off my, (somewhat dodgy), self control.

Apparently I travel in a lower paced time-space continuum the most of my peers. I'm still on Win 7 and enjoying it immensely. Before you panic, (not that you would), my needs are not as extravagant as many others here. One thing did before so many others, is shut off updates altogether. Would you believe I never got a single notice to "upgrade to 10"? No flashing red screens whatsoever. When I installed win 7, the activation servers were already shut down. At that time though, relief was still just a toll free number away.

Anyhoo, out of curiosity, I perused what updates were still available for 7. I came upon one KB-sumpin, sumpin, that explained itself as, "this update helps you install Windows 10". I'm guessing what they really meant was, "this update makes your computer so unbearable to use, you'll be dying to install #10". Passed on that one. I did however, acquiesce to installing "the final cumulative security update package". What that did was proceed to blow up warnings about "redirects", when I was navigating from Google to Walmart. If I didn't know better, I'd swear M$ was trying to further, "incentivize", my migration to #10. But they wouldn't willfully ruin someone's OS, or would they? I forget whether I got away with a rollback, or did a reinstall, to retreat to the hopelessly outdated, security sieve, which was the version I much preferred. (And still do).

At this juncture, I did give "Mint" a shot. on an ancient Intel G-31 dual core Pentium w/ 4 gigs of RAM. I managed to decompile it, (or it did it on it's own?), due to several hard power off shutdowns in under 3 hours. 32 bit Win 7 pro weathered the same storm admirably, without a hitch. Of course on today's web, you can get a good 6 to 10 tabs open before the fatal crash. But hey, who's counting. That piece needs "recycled" to a Chinese landfill. But it does boot and run.Sometimes I think I'm too sentimental. Not to mention that, "parting is such sweet sorrow".

In other news, Adobe is shutting its legs on perpetual licenses of Photoshop Elements. The 2026 version is down to 3 years before its ignominious demise.

Then there's Western Digital, who has decided to cash in on the flash shortage. I think I have 2 6TB and an 8TB waiting to be installed. IIRC all were bought, "on sale". I paid (again IIRC), $200.00 for the 8 TB. which is now listed at a meager $464.99 on their site. But hey, it's a "gaming drive", that costs extra you know. Although ya can't blame that price on the orange looney-tune's tariffs, now can ya? I'd better stop here before I go ballistically political.

Anyway, speaking of Gigabyte boards, while I can't lay claim to building 50 machines with them, I have them going all the way back to Intel G-31, and they all still work fine and dandy.

Cheers...!

I'm, NOT reading novels.
This thread was effectively dead before I typed my first character last night.

Sometimes, I get the urge to practice, (for better or worse), my creative writing "skills". (Or try to remediate the lack thereof).

I can't recall issuing any sort of demand or plea, insisting that you must read my "novels". (To be fair, they don't even reach "novella", length.)

You weren't quoted in any of them. Thus, your response, " I'm, NOT reading novels", was entirely unnecessary.

So, have you considered the possibility exists that you like to hear yourself talk as much as I do, just in much shorter sentences and capital letters?
