OS X, iOS and Linux have more vulnerabilities than Windows



The NVD has some revealing statistics for the number of vulnerabilities that were reported in each of the operating systems and GFI Blog has crunched the numbers; many will be surprised to find that Windows is not at the top of the list. In fact, in 2014 it is OS X that was found to be riddled with the greatest number of security problems -- 147 in total, including 64 rated as high severity, and 67 as medium. Also from the Apple stables, iOS did not fare all that much better: 127 vulnerabilities including 32 high and 72 with a medium rating.

Surprisingly, its not as shocking as it is made to sound here ....... but still some interesting figures.

I thought Windows is supposed to be most vulnerable...
Considering that Windows is mainstream, which subjects it to more/constant attacks

Hackers play the ROI game (that's return on investment). Attack the largest number of systems in an attempt to get access to a few.

As each attack is unique to the vulnerability and then the platform {Win, OS x, iOS, Linux, ...} getting the attack to get through the vulnerability is the first major hurtle. If there's an addition set of conditions per platform . . . the ROI gets lower and lower.

The vulnerabilites have always been there, just now the ROI to make the attack is worth the effort.

SO the game is changing, especially with millions of mobile devices - - the ROI increases and so does the efforts of the hackers.
