Outlook Express v6

A pal of mine was running OutLook Express on Windows 98, he's French speaking and sends e-mails to parents in France. He has recently changed laptop and operting system to XP. He now finds when running OutLook Express v6 he is unable to access the puncuting accent symbols that he was able with the previous arrangement. This may be due to a tick not being in the right box. Can anybody help.

Best wishes

Sounds like he's got only US keyboard layout installed.

Steps to check:
1) Start > Settings > Control Panel
2) Once you're in Control Panel double-click on Regional and Language Options icon.
3) Regional and Language Options settings window will appear. Click on Languages tab.
4) In Languages tab click on Details button (top-right).
5) Text Services and Input Languages window will appear. At this point you've to check that appropriate French keyboard is installed. You may need a Windows XP CD-ROM to complete this action.
6) Once installed keyboards can be toggled by clicking left Shift + Alt (default setting). Icon appears in the task bar, which indicates which keyboard is active. Keyboard has to be selected on per application basis. Your buddy may want to select French [FR] keyboard as his default one.

Good luck!

Tell him to either get a French keyboard, add the French keyboard layout (Control Panel/Regional and Language Settings), or make a printout (or hand-copy) of the ASCII-codes for accented characters from http://www.lookuptables.com/
You type those in using the numeric keypad on the keyboard.

Hi RealBlackStuff,

Thanks for you response. If you enter ASCII-codes as you suggested as one approach, what key if any do you have to hold down while entering numeric key input?

Best wishes
