With that said. Anyone that shops, does banking, or keeps job related secrets on their machine, should be using a currently supported OS. But other than that. I'm not going to shake my finger at anyone, regardless of their OS of choice.

When I bought my Toshiba laptop, it came with win8 on it. I have some purchased programs that I use but they would NOT work with win8, so I had win7 installed on the computer. EVERYTHING works great; I saw the mess that win8 was, and I have ZERO interest in win10.

I do NOT do updates and my 'puter runs great.

Basically I think MS is a sales force and not a tech group. It seems their updates have too many problems for being a tech wise company, but they do know how to sell.......

Yes, I have been using win7 for years, just REMOVE IE, stop all upgrades (they are only to support the MESS that is IE!!)
Use a good AV, and good browser like Firefox - if you don't like that, have a look at Pale moon that is very much like the old FF, but with good extensions on the Pale moon website!!

I find it laughable that many people think the market share was because of old PC's in schools. lol
most power users still use w7 and can differentiate was it good from what sucks.
w10 sucks. if Microsoft has any clue then why did they fail in both the mobile space and tablets?
They can just make everyone satisfied by allowing full customization and adding XP and W7 shells to w10 but they refuse. it just doesn't make sense. this way you can have all the security updates of w10 but have options to look like w7 or XP.
They stay around on Desktop cause Linux can't get friendly enough or no real alternative.
too bad for us. we as the customer are losers.

Because they don't maintain Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows Vista... at some point 7 has to join that list. It's the inevitable march of progress.

If you don't like Windows 10, learn Linux. Whichever flavor you choose, it's a modern, secure OS that will likely do whatever you need and be less annoying than Windows. I made the switch to Linux Mint almost a year ago on my main laptop and it's honestly been brilliant.

Honestly, if you don't know that answer to that in this day an age maybe you shouldn't be using a computer.
Oh, if you need one for work then do some research. Plenty of info out there today to help you decide on a computer/OS that's right for you.

I wouldn't mix "change" with "progress"...

Windows 8 was a big change compared to Windows 7, but it was the opposite from progress. Windows 10 is a lot better than Windows 8, but it suffers from multiple personality disorder.

People literally love to pile on Windows 8 because of the weird Start screen - yes, that IS terrible, but you can change it, and then it's actually better than 7. So few people realize this, everyone basically wrote off Windows 8 but it's actually an excellent OS.

And 8.1 is even better still, I used it on my main gaming PC for several years.

That is true based on your opinion. The UI will make or break an OS, regardless of security and feature set. The UI is what sells a new OS. No one pays attention to security and features. If they did security and features would be upgraded without changing the UI.

It's like buying a great car, but not getting the steering wheel (sorry Kimi), seats, any instruments, or switches. It's a fantastic car, once you install all that stuff, connect all the wires and adjust the parameters.

The question is: Why do you have to do it yourself? Did Microsoft pair with IKEA? "Some assembly required"? How come they don't have a group of test users that could give them honest opinion about their product? As if they are producing a minor Android causal game, so no testing required.

It's a long practice in Microsoft that every other version of Windows looks like it was just merged in Git, passed the basic tests, and shipped. No user-testing done.

This could also mean that Windows 11 might be crap, assuming it's a completely new OS, but fortunately it's just Windows 10.1.

I've been installing different OS's (DOS, 3.1, 95, NT4, 98se, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, Server2012, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 11)since '99 and can honestly say there have been 2 great versions of Windows thus far... Windows 2000 and Windows 7.
2000 (not to be confused with ME) was very fast and light and quite similar to 98SE, no support for hyperthreading killed it though.
Windows 7 just got everything right. It's very polished, settings are easy to access, layout is clean, Start menu actually makes things you want very accessible.

Windows 10 has failed so badly to make the user experience better. You cannot honestly say ANYTHING is easier to access in 10 than in 7. Try changing your IP address, heck check your wifi connection speed. I get that some stuff is user preference, but M$ is telling you what is great and what you should like, sound familiar (crApple)

Why do I have to install ClassicShell just to make this crap UI usable?

What needs to change...
1- M$ should have layout UI's as options in the personalization settings. That would be a game changer for me... Call the OS "Windows" and let me pick which UI I want to use! I like 7, Joe likes XP, Rick will never let Vista die!.
2- Allow users to turn off Automatic updates (so tired of updates installing every time I boot up)
3- Quit trying to make my computer act like a tablet or phone. I don't need notifications.

Saying Windows 10 is great is non-sense, you may love it but people who love Windows 7 don't just have their heads buried in the sand; they miss choosing if you want updates or not, to not send usage data, to see how their computer performance rating (WEI), and a fully polished, professionally built user experience.

I'm amazed that these W7 threads keep banging on. XP for me was the most successful OS but I got over its redundancy many years ago. W11 is going to be tied to the latest hardware and that's annoying but we'll have to adapt or start looking at Apple and Crome OS systems. Moaning continually about Microsoft achieves nothing.

Nadella, as far as I'm concerned, is the executive equivalent of an H-1B vise worker. He's 10 times as evil as Bill Gates ever was, and most likely working for 1/10 of the money. Which, unless my math skills have failed me, it makes M$ 100 times as big a scourge than it ever was. (OK, granted that's a bit of an abstraction from actual traditional math). So what?

"Captcha" wants to issue individuals, "an individual Captcha USB key". (So you don't have to go through 'all the trouble' of solving a few simple picture puzzles),

Couple that with TPM 2.0, and privacy on the web will be a complete thing if the past. They'll know where you are every minute of every dat, if now even a shorter interval of time.

I chose all of my windows install. I never once got any Ballon pop-up forcing me. I custom built my computer n installed windows so that may be why I never saw anything. Pre built systems unless configured, likely have seen some of those options. I never did.

It didn't happen to me either, but I know why. I had Windows automatic update turned off years before Windows 10 was released.

That is not the way I see it. The IT department shouldn't have to babysit MS. This was MS crossing a line that had never been crossed before. And you are going to blame the IT department for not catching something they never had to catch before. This is all on MS for being so aggressive.

Not really. When M$ tried to RAM (**) Windows 10 down everyone's throats, I had one boxed copy of Win 7 64 bit Pro on hand. I quickly undertook building a new machine, with a "close out" board and CPU from Micro Center. (Which BTW, gives the best combo buys on those two items together, one assumes hoping you'll purchase the rest of the system parts from them. In my case, no such luck)). But I digress.

I obviously had to go to M$ update after the Win 7 install. Funny thing though, I pick and choose which updates to install, instead of, taking the lazy way out with, "select all". I actually read the "what this update does box", next the the KB-designation.

I hit one KB-sumpin' sumpin" which said, "this update helps you install Windows 10. I immediately recognized it as the "nag me to death" notice, that everyone had been pissing and moaning about.

Personally, I never got the horse sh!t "get Windows 10 this very minute", on any of my Windows 7 machines. Since I turned off "automatic updates", somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 years ago.

So, the people with auto update, got an advanced beta of Windows 10, "for free",, after which, M$ then proceeded to install a new and complete OS, every time M$ and Nadella felt so moved, which couldn't be avoided.

Now, M$ has introduced hardware requirements for Windows 11, (which BTW, was never supposed to happen), which looks for all the world, like they're trying to introduce, "planned obsolescence" into your desktops, as if they were some stinking cell phone.

At the end of the day, the only mistake the IT department made at that TV station, was placing too much trust in M$, "to do the right thing", and not sh!t bomb their update channel, with crap, bullying, advertisements for their newest OS.
