Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 have skyrocketed by 104% in America between August 23 and August 29 -- the Slim's launch week. The 7 days prior to the Slim's release Sony moved 37,167 units, and upon its arrival that number more than doubled to 75,931.

VGChartz notes that because the PlayStation 3 Slim was unavailable at many retailers during its debut week, high sales may continue in the immediate future. They have also reported that some major outlets like GameStop, Best Buy, Gamecrazy, and Amazon experienced a 200% leap in PlayStation 3 sales, while Walmart and Target saw a 50% increase.

On a global scale, PlayStation 3 sales are down, with 109,485 units having sold. VGChartz believes this is due to Japan and other regions awaiting the Slim's release. Meanwhile, Nintendo shipped 365,243 DS and 191,655 Wii units during the week, Microsoft sold 142,881 Xbox 360s, and Sony moved 136,434 PSPs and 63,160 PS2s.

Uh...didn't people already know it was coming out, meaning lots of them were undoubtedly waiting to buy the new one the week before?

Umm, so what, its a tech report, dont state the obvious.

Anyway. I'm glad sony's line of consoles has jumped a bit, it will creative more competitive prices eventually.

I think you missed the point. Comparing back a week is just misleading people, not reporting news.
It's not a jump, because everyone was just waiting to buy one until the new one came out with a lower price.

the price cut makes all thd difference , if sony marketed properly , the fact that parents of screaming kids wanting the ps3 , would also get the benefit of a multi media , they would be flying out the door .

Now that its cheeper, people are buying it. Most kids these days want everything, and they'll own all the consoles out, and then it just comes down to games. If, however, they dropped the PS3 games price from $60(ridiculous), to $50 (semi-ridiculous) I bet they would sell way more games. $60 is way over priced, and that first started when microsoft tested it for the 360 and people gave in..thank you 360 ppl =(

hello ....
seems like it's impossible to satisfy most people ..
the sale boost is effectively because of the wait .. still that means that a lot of person were interested in the first place.
the constant rumours of the price cut & the PS3 slim kept the sales low for the preceding 6 months ... while the competitors were selling fine. Still the PS3 sales wasn't that bad ... 20 millions more isn't BAD !!!
now that the PS3 Slim is for real & the $100 drop creates the equation ...
it's a worthy system, with NOW a real impressive (more than others) & TRULY EXCLUSIVE LINE UP ...
some people bought because it was affordable to them, others because now at a price where they could have more than 1 console ..
but we must not forget that great games are coming .. so having a PS3 is a good thing, whether it be the sole console of your house or just another one sitting next to your WII / Xbox360 & PC ...
cheers!
