Retailer in Canada puts pricey AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and 7900X up for pre-order

Forward-looking: An online storefront has started listing the tray versions of four upcoming AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors: meet the upcoming Ryzen 9 7950X, Ryzen 9 7900X, Ryzen 7 7700X, and Ryzen 5 7600X. All of them are listed for more than their current-gen Zen 3 counterparts, but not terribly much more.

It seems like we can't go a single hardware release without at least one retailer jumping the gun and listing the series before it's officially launched. This time around it's PC Canada, which has actually listed some motherboards too early once before.

The retailer will currently let you add Ryzen 7000 series processors to your cart, enter your payment information and make a reservation for them. They say that they'll ship once the chips are in stock, but won't say exactly when that will be.

PC Canada prices the 7950X and 7900X at $890 and $610, respectively, with the prices converted from CAD to USD. They also list the Ryzen 7700X for $480 and the 7600X for $330. Across the board, the prices are an average ~10% higher than the current generation, but those are not the official prices which might be quite different.

AMD confirmed the names of the four processors last month when it added them to its online catalogue. When it teased them in May, the company hinted that the series would be following the same or a similar 16, 12, 8 and 6-core template to the 5000 series.

Expreview and other sites have claimed to have the full specifications for the series on hand, but didn't have any evidence to back themselves up. Still, it's worth mentioning that rumors indicate that all four processors will have base clocks of about 4.5 GHz and boost clocks of about 5.5 GHz, with the 7950X reaching a sky-high 5.7 GHz.

AMD demonstrated the Ryzen 9 7950X clocked at 5.5 GHz running Ghostwire Tokyo at Computex, making 5.7 GHz a possibility. It later confirmed that the processor wasn't overclocked or using exotic cooling during the demo.

In a recent earnings call, AMD CEO Lisa Su said that the processors would be released in September. MSI perhaps mistakenly shared promotional posters for its X670 motherboards claiming that the series would launch on September 15. Several sources have said that AMD plans on announcing the Ryzen 7000 series on August 29, the day after Gamescom concludes.

For now, rest assured we'll have timely reviews of all the new CPUs when time comes.

Haha. Never heard of PC Canada. I just checked it out and see why. They are charging full price for Zen 3! CC has had them all on sale for weeks.

Comparing full price, PC Canada charges more for 5900X ($50), 5600X ($30) and 5800X ($17) than the more popular Canada Computers retailer. 5950X is ever so slightly cheaper at PC Canada.

Zen 4 will most likely cost more than Zen 3. AMD liked multiples of $50 last time so we'll see what happens. Apparently the X670 boards are gonna be expensive!

New products are never cheap. So not unexpected that any company will choose to launch at a higher price. With market outlook looking increasingly gloomy, I feel it is a matter of time before we see price come down.

I don't, I expect prices to be lower.
5000 series were the last upgrade to AM4, now with new motherboards and RAM required, not too much headroom to overcharge for the cpu.
Plus Intel actually has proper competition now to offer.
If they go higher, they won't sell.

Wasn't an article the other days where Intel say would raise prices?
I don't see any season for AMD not to follow. Aslo with the global inflation from 10 to 20% and energy prices boom. The production of those CPU's will be on latest TSMC node, also with a higher price.
I expect new gen to be at least 20-35% more than old gen and not counting on AM5 MB, DDR5 RAM to get any lower.

Prices won't go down that easily. The smaller the process node the more expensive it becomes to build these chips. Prices might get adjusted by the end of the year if Intel is ahead of AMD with the 13th gen by a good margin, but the launch MSRP should be similar to the 5000 series.

I expect AMD to launch the 3D chips sooner than many expect if Zen4 can't compete.

I live in Canada and I don't think many people buy anything from PC Canada. I think they act like a middleman, taking peoples' orders and then filling them from their own or other companies stock. That is always more expensive. Many online retailers in Canada don't act like people want the cheapest price they can get. They angle to extract the very last penny they can get.

the PC is still where you get the best gaming experience.

for me, high refresh rates and high FPS are just too important for most games and consoles can't do that yet.
