Ridiculous start-up time 25 mins!

You are being advised to remove all the USB host controllers, reboot and let them reinstall.

I tried the msconfig diagnostic start up but I am not sure what this is supposed to tell me?
I couldn't use the internet in this mode

We still have no idea what's starting up on the system. Someone should have you at least run HijackThis to get an idea. You may have a gazillion processes starting up and running in the background!

It doesn't have to be malware. I am uncertain as to how the thread took the USB direction. Is that because the card reader light was blinking?

I'll vote for that.
I would also like to see a scan by MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and Aviria done before the scan by HiJackThis so that all four scans are available as soon as you send them in.

I ran the programs as suggested

I couldn't see how to get a log from superantispyware, but it found nothing anyway

PC seems to be getting slower by the day!

Be certain you have backed up all the files, addresses, and eMail that are important to you... because the only thing left is a failing hard drive.
It could on like this, slow, slow, slow for two or three months before crashing, or it could die this afternoon.
You can still save files to a new hard drive as a precaution... using Acronis or one of the other file copy programs.

If you would allow me to make a 'non-malware' related comment:

You are starting this system up with an extraordinary number of processes and Services. I don't know how the system moves at all!

IF you want to work on that:
Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter> Selective Startup> Startup menu>
UNCHECK everything except the AV, the firewall and if on a laptop, leave the process for the Touchpad> Apply> OK.

Reboot the computer. Ignore and close the nag message that comes up after checking 'don't show this message again.' Stay in Selective Startup.

Stop all-ALL-the updaters except the AV, stop all the scanners on boot, stop all the HP processes- printer, scanner, stop all the camera and music programs and on and on....you get the idea?

Everything that starts on boot continues to run in the background. After you do that, work on the unnecessary Services you have starting up Automatically. Here are references:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
http://ss64.com/ntsyntax/services.html

Many Services can be set to Manual- some can even be disabled- only a few are required to start automatically. Take you time on this. Best to do it in Safe Mode and always check the tab for Dependencies.

I thought I had seen them all until I came across your Babblegumupdater! Judging by the description, I would bet it's a HUGH resource user. Do you know that you can start a program manually when you need it instead of having it run in the background? Do you use the printer every day-how about the camera, scanner, etc. Why run them needlessly.

Note: I have NOT checked you system logs for malware. And yes, the hard drive could be failing. But even without either of those issues you system will be slowwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Thanks for the help guys

I have done as suggested

Do you think its worth replacing the hard drive if it fails, or should I just get a new PC?

Its probably about 4 or 5 years old now?

I have done as suggested
And what was that? There are 35 posts on this thread.

Do you think its worth replacing the hard drive if it fails, or should I just get a new PC?

If the hard drive fails, you will HAVE to replace it! Do you need a new PC because your system is 4-5 years old? Not necessarily.

The final decision has to be based on what the actual problem is and as far as I could see, that is still undetermined.

sorry bobbye, what i meant was what you had just suggested, and I have done a back up to an external hd as raybay suggested

My other question was, with my spec, is it worth upgrading, or just getting a new PC?

I know I will need a hard drive, but I think the spec of other components I have isn't the best so they may need upgrading too

Is it worth upgrading? To what?

Getting a new PC: You have my 'permission.'

But any PC needs maintenance.
