Ryzen 5 2600X vs. 2600: Which should you buy?

Recently switched from i7 2600K @4.7Ghz with 1866MHz DDR3 to Ryzen 5 2600 @4Ghz (haven't pushed further yet)with 3200Mhz DDR4. Even managed to get a new bracket from Corsair for my old H50 all in one closed loop water cooler so could use it with the Ryzen. The boot up time, multitasking smoothness, speed of operations in Lightroom. It's been a worthwhile upgrade for me, but for pure gaming just getting a more powerful graphics card would probably have been a better upgrade.
You just kind of answered the question I posted above. It's not really worth spending 500 euros and upgrade from my 2500k @4.7ghz.
Cheers

Yeah, I saw your earlier post about the 2500k. I got gifted the Ryzen 5 2600 and AM4 motherboard, otherwise I wouldn't have gone for it to be honest. But with 1 year old twins not sure the next time I'll be able to get an upgrade :D

PS: are you in the uk and interested in my old DDR3 1866 32gb of ram :p

I managed 4.2 ghz with 3466 mhz on a cheap B-350 using a 2400g. The only POSSIBLE trend is that the x models have slightly better memory controllers but this is not definitive. HWbot can sometimes be used as a guide to what the average overclock is, but this is not reliable as the more skillful overclocked will get the x models just to be safe.
Hey, care to share what CPU cooler and mobo you're using? I'm considering a 2400G build. Thanks.

Before moving into my ITX case I was using an ASUS TUF B-350 and an H-80i Corsair AIO. The current ASRock AB-350 is also nice, but I haven't pushed it hard on the CPU as cooling is limited. Both boards were great with the Gskill 3200 cas 14 memory.

I did delid my CPU, but it was not that necessary if you have something like the H80i cooler. As far as 120mm coolers go, there are none better. It is a very thick radiator and can be used in push/pull. It outperforms most 240mm coolers, believe it or not.

@Sausagemeat
Nobody cares about live story, sob or not. Go buy whatever, pay anything, work all your life or not work at all. To the point, even 9900K with 2080Ti is a cheapo PC for some of us out here, I build HEDT PCs for a living and yet I have 2700X with 1080Ti for my personal PC.
I rather go for a month in Australia or Egypt then pay more for faster gaming rig.
Why would I spend more then I need?

Absolutely valid, each individual has different needs and is willing to spend a number on what they want. As long as they are happy with their choices, that's good enough for the world at large and anybody too concerned about it should really ask themselves why they care so much about such little things...

It would be foolish to buy one of these right now (unless you need a CPU right away). Zen 2 will be out very soon and the prices on these will be slashed. The 2700 is already selling for just a little more than these. Now is the time to be patient.

I got a ryzen 2600 a few weeks ago. Maybe I could have waited but my i7 3770k died and I don't really game anymore. I really just do virtualization in Linux and it's great for that

Oh yeah, I mean if someone needs a CPU right now they are definitely the best deal. I just meant for people thinking of upgrading it would pay off to wait until Zen 2 arrives I think.

I was going to wait but my laptop just wasn't cutting it. It's perfect for what I need now anyway. I wanted to get a 2700 but I basically stole an ASRock AB350 in a combo deal

I do VT & gaming in the same machine without any issues with the 2600, which the f 8400 struggled a lot, is just simply not enough
