I know WHY the companies did it. Look, nVidia knows that lots of the GPUs they are selling aren't being used and they're more than happy to sell those, too. There is this weird FOMO going on right now with AI hardware and everyone is buying as much of it as they can and they don't even care if they are over paying. They are buying them because they think they MIGHT need them later and second, they are limiting the potential supply to their competitors. There is already an over abundance of hardware sitting in warehouse they they can't use. There was no technical need to make it, but as AI companies are paying for it there was a financial incentive to do so. Don't confuse the 2. Companies will always pick the latter over the former.
I like the term "just in time" manufacturing where you only build what you need and time it so that it is done just in time as you need it. There is so much hardware sitting around that they have years worth of it already stock piled. People are buying it faster than they can deploy it and they continue to do so even with a massive stockpile they can't even use, it's absurd. Micron and nvidia are just selling shovels during a gold rush. The problem is that there is no gold and everyone keeps buying shovels they don't need.
I don't think this is some type of coordinated shortage, it's more like everyone wants to make hay while the sun is shining.
