Senators look at adding missile alerts to Netflix, Spotify

Why it matters: The false inbound missile alert that terrified the residents of Hawaii in January is something nobody wants to see repeated. To try and prevent any future mistakes, and to ensure more people see genuine alerts, two US senators have introduced a bill called the Reliable Emergency Alert Distribution Improvement (READI) act. One of its most interesting elements looks at sending emergency notifications through streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify.

Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz and South Dakota Senator John Thune introduced the act yesterday. It explores the idea expanding emergency alerts, including missile warnings, beyond phones to cover TVs, radios, and “online streaming services, such as Netflix and Spotify.”

The Senators have asked that the Federal Communications Commission “complete an inquiry to examine the feasibility of establishing systems and signaling to offer Emergency Alert System alerts to audio and video streaming services delivered over the internet.”

While nothing would ruin your enjoyment of the latest Stranger Things series quite like news of an impending nuclear strike, it could ensure more people see the warnings and give them enough time to hide, pray, or drink heavily before the bomb hits.

The bill also looks at removing the ability to opt out of receiving federal alerts on your phone, creating a better way of reporting false alarms, and requiring some alerts to be repeatedly broadcast. "Our bill fixes a number of important problems with the system responsible for delivering emergency alerts," Schatz said.

As noted by Engadget, the earlier ALERT act, which gives the federal government total control over sending out emergency alerts, was passed by the Senate last month, but there’s no guarantee it will become law. The READI act faces similar challenges.

Should the alerts ever make their way into streaming services, it would be even more critical to ensure that a mistake on the level of the Hawaii incident is never again repeated.

Please don't. This will devolve into weekly tests that will be incredibly annoying. Missile alerts? They seem to
be working as hard as possible to scare everyone as much as they can. I went through this nonsense with duck and cover. On the surface it may seem to make sense. It really doesn't make any sense at all. It won't be what they say it will be. Stay out of our Internet services gubmint. Why not put out alien invasion alerts while we're at it?

Once the space force goes live maybe we will :p

Weather and Amber alerts...eh, sure. Though I think having my smartphone bark at me is already enough. Missile alerts? I refuse to start worrying about missiles. If someone drops a bomb on my town then it's my time and I blame Trump.

In order for this to work, you really have to have a fallout shelter on your property. Bear in mind that the Russians will hack into the system, and instead of missile warnings you'll get warnings that watermelons are headed your way. But you'll be prepared because the intelligence agencies will have warned you about what the Russians are up to, and the intelligence agencies never lie, except when they claim that Iraq has WMD. Oh, but that was 15 years ago, and since that time they've become COMPLETELY HONEST. When they tell you that the Russians interfered with our elections, even though they've never offered even one shred of evidence, you HAVE to believe them, especially since Hillary Democrats and Republican war hawks say the same thing.

It's easier to control people using fear tactics. And I believe we are seeing more of these tactics because those in power are fearing the loss of said power.

Their stupidity has no bounds, like someone said, why not add alien invasion alerts while they're at it.

Somebody will be very tempted to break into this system and send a false warning. I am ignoring all missile alert if that system is ever in place.

The first rule of Space Force is , don't talk about Space Force.

As I understand it, there are some who voted for 45 specifically because they want him to bring the apocalypse.

No alerts at all. No weather alerts. No Amber alerts. Everyone would wind up getting all alerts and not be able to watch what they paid for. No alerts, please. None.
