A number of major retailers, airlines and even cargo transporters have now banned "hoverboards," this holiday's must-have gift, due to their hazardous nature. If you've somehow been living under a rock the past few weeks, this Saturday Night Live sketch that aired over the weekend pretty much sums it up.

As SNL portrays in its skit, these auto-balancing people transporters aren't exactly the safest gift you can buy this holiday season. I don't have the statistics on how many have gone bad but there are plenty of news reports of spontaneously combusting boards, taking out some families' homes in the process.

Found is a TechSpot feature where we share clever, funny or otherwise interesting stuff from around the web.

Well maybe this will encourage new battery tech development to speed up a bit.

I do wonder, what the statics are of hover boards bursting into flames are. Excluding the cheapo knock offs like RioRand, because we all know how the media likes to exacerbate.

Anytime you power a HIGH CURRENT motor with a battery, if the battery isn't able to safely handle that current load, or when charging, if the cells in the battery are not matched, look out.
