So you only have PCI slots and want to game?

The cards doesn't look like its on sale right now, albatron is taking their sweet time even adding the last card, the 8400gs. I don't know when the cards will be release, i sent a email to them, but they have been ignoring me for weeks lol.

My next project is gonna be based around the dual core Atom 330 rumored to come out sometime not in the very far future (Or if all else fails, the Atom 230 will do), but I need to secure a PCI8600GT first. If you find one, please post it here.

Thanks.

Well actually in a few weeks i might have a chance to grab one of the new 8 series cards. I have to fly out to a state to talk to some folks, so i will be printing out the cards and show them, and at their warehouse/center, they might have it. I might have to get someone to order the card for me, only thing, i do not believe albarton has release the cards yet.

So in a few weeks if i get it, i will let everyone know. :)

Btw direwolf007 , can you play Crysis with the 8500GT?

Considering its hooked up to a VIA C7-D, I haven't even thought of trying that. I am trying CoD4 as the latest game in my benchmark series, which should be uploaded later today.

Nice, how many fps do you get in COD4?
You should be able to play crysis at least at 1024x768 everything on low to medium with no AA. I posted Crysis shots on another forum, with my PIII/600MHZ and i got 19fps at one part, but other parts didn't peform good, getting 1-5-13fps. And i had the settings at 1280x1024, everything to medium to high, plus advanced bump mapping on, and other things in the ATI tray tools at high.

I was just testing, but i think i could play Crysis better on this computer if i had one of those 8 series cards and kept the video settings at maybe 800x600 everything on medium.

I find it extremely hard to believe you can run 1280x1024 at medium-high on the Pentium III, considering a rig consisting of an Intel E2160 at 3.15Ghz and a HD3850 256Mb video card can barely reach playable FPS on high at the same resolution and my Dell XPS M1530 laptop, with a T7500 C2D CPU at 2.2Ghz and a GeForce 8600M GT 256Mb (DDR3), can reach playable FPS at 1280x800 on medium, but also not crossing the mark by far. Both systems are miles beyond your Pentium III and with more powerful video cards, in both cases on a PCIe x16 interface.

Alrighty. The review is done. Judge by yourselves and remember that the CPU is a serious bottleneck.

Very awesome... And I think you are right, that it is probably the only pci review in the last 5 years haha... So I think I'm going to pick up the Sparkle if I can get The Eurostore to send it to me:).

Direwolf007 - click on my Newegg link in my previous posts and request the 8600 GT from Albatron. There is no vendor for the card in America and Albatron won't sell you one directly according to what they tell me. Sparkle 8500 GT was a great PCI card, but 8600 GT is supposed to be even better, so get the word out.

Hey direwolf007 whats the minimum power supply you need to run the Sparkle 8500gt cause I havent been able to find that info anywhere?

hey guys, don't forget there is a new PCI card out so we can buy it. The 8400GS, there is a post about it.

Also, nice review direwolf, i notice you was maxing games out, but those games seems playable with the card if you leave the settings at 1024x768 everything on low to medium.

So you have PCI-E X16 slots?
Thats good, but i am gaming with pci for life. I am buying a secondary computer tho, but i will still use PCI for this computer :)

I'd like to point out that all the games which aren't playable maxed out were tested on medium and on the lowest settings as well. It didn't help any of them, really. Do not forget the VIA C7 is extremely weak, to the point it manages to bottleneck even a PCI bus card.

teklord, I'll request the Albatron cards from Newegg as well, even though it will not help me. I am not in the US and Newegg won't ship here.

Good question. I do not really know. I am using a HEC 250SRT (250W) PSU for the mini-rig.

An overclocked version of the 8500GT (But less than I overclocked mine), along with a Q6600 at 3Ghz took 200 Watts of power running 3DMark06. Considering a PCI-E slot provides up to 75W of power (I could not find the PCI or AGP figure, anyone knows the PCI max power ?) and I seem to find that the 8500GT draws a max of 35-40W of power on its own, then if the intended rig is the one in your specs, a 200W PSU should do the trick and a 250W PSU definitely will.

many games would not start as they need a pentium 4 and above, the mobo looked little for that card.

If I use Fraps free version there's no sound, is there with the full version.

Yes the free version has no sound options. Btw, electromagnetic, you know there is new pci card out in the united states, the 8400GS. I am picking one up soon :)

Your system requirement explanation is wrong. Fact is the minimum system requirements for Homeworld 2, which failed to run, are a 833Mhz Pentium III CPU or an equivalent and a 32Mb T&L video card. Both are quite clearly satisfied by the system I built. A similar occurs with Rome: Total War, which has the system requirements of a 1Ghz Pentium III or an equivalent processor and a 64Mb video card. Your theory also fails to explain Crysis and CoD4 running.

The issue is probably deeper than that, perhaps the instruction sets the VIA C7 can utilize, some chipset architecture issue, some problem involving the PCI-E to PCI bridge or the fact that the older games couldn't interact with the much newer drivers (But that fails to explain Hellgate: London not starting). We might never know.

As for the mobo being little, it is. The card is pretty much the length of the board, and if placed flat on top of it, it takes up more than 66% of the board's area.

Interesting: My 2400 Visiontek Card can't run prey at all, i use to get what 1-5fps, 12max. But going back using the BFG OC 6200 PCI card, i get between 22-42. hmmmmmm. This game is running very smooth. Now sometimes it will slow down to 15, i once notice 11, then within about 2-3 seconds it speeds up again to 22 - 40fps at times. Weird, but nevertheless awesome. :) I think it slows down like that, because maybe it is texture loading, who knows.

yes Prey gets about that 20fps and smooth I thought the Ati Radeon card 2400 would be better :(
Got the Crysis Pc demo up and tweaking about with the settings. You got to higher your virtual memory.

hey electromagnetic don't forget a new Geforce pci card is out. The 8400GS with 512MB. I am going to buy it soon.

Also, the 2400 card is weak, its missing certain hardware features, like opengl acceleration, thats why its not performing well. The 6200 blows it away

FYI, an indefinite delay to the Albatron PCI's:

For the URL, mind the "double-u"s and put in real ones. Can't post links yet.

Well sorry to hear about the delay, i suggest everyone buy this until they come out:
