Those who have SATA RAID on the motherboard, that is connected to a Western Digital SATA HDD in a Vantec Nexstar 3 external HDD closure have POST freezing problems. I had the same issue, and found the solution:
Put a Jumper on the Western Digital HDD, so it defaults back to SATA v.1, 150MB/s mode (OPT1 on the jumper picture here http://support.wdc.com/images/kb/sata.gif). That fixes the problem.
