Sometimes computer freezes for seemingly no reason

I don't know where to start. Sometimes the computer freezes for apparently no reason. I had 3 tabs open in Water Fox and it froze. It's done this before (with Fire Fox). Where can I look to find the cause?

Is it just locking up that you can't move your mouse etc, but no error message?
Or do you get a big blue screen or something similar?

Also how does it "unfreeze" - do you have to reboot, or does it just unlock itself after some time?

There are no error messages, no blue screen, just locks up. I have to reboot.

What are the computer's specs? Desktop or laptop? Power supply, motherboard, make and model?

Desktop
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V LE
Power supply: Corsair 660W ATX
RAM: 8GB of DDR3 dual channel
Windows 7 64bit (this one crashes) Mint Linux (never has crashed but use it less frequently)

Is Windows fully updated using Windows Update manually till no more updates are found? Are you over-clocking?
