Sony says it will be "some time" before the PlayStation 5 is released

With so much attention now on Microsoft and its upcoming Xbox One X console, what does the near future hold for Sony? There have been suggestions that the Japanese company could release its PlayStation 5 as earlier as next year as a response to Microsoft’s 4K machine, but president Shawn Layden says the PS5 won’t arrive for “some time.”

During an interview with German site Golem.de, Layden was asked if we can ever expect to see games released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 Pro, to which he replied, “That will never happen.”

“The Pro is really only to offer advantages such as 4K resolutions and HMD for players who can and want to use that. Add to this a more stable image rate and larger hard disk space. But [PS4 owners have] no real disadvantages. Each of our games will continue to run on the classic PS4 and possibly slightly better on the Pro.”

When the interviewer then asked about the PlayStation 5, Layden said it would “probably be some time” before the next generation console arrives.

Back in May, Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong predicted that the PS5 would arrive sometime during the second half of 2018. While this sounds unlikely, it’s worth remembering that Thong is the same person who correctly predicted both the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro.

But with the PlayStation 4 Pro having only just released in November last year, many are skeptical about the chances of a PS5 arriving within the next 18 months. There’s also the fact that the Xbox One X’s launch could help boost PS4 Pro sales through developers working on more multi-platform 4K/HDR-enabled games.

In reality, it would be a massive surprise to see the PlayStation 5 released before 2019 or even 2020, by which time new technologies should result in a big generational leap forward between the PS4 and PS5.

They said this about the XBO and PS4 before 90% of the games struggled to break 1080p/30.

If that's not another way of saying "Don't bother wasting your money on that Pro job", then I don't know what is.

That is pretty sad. I hope that the XBOX One X doesn't face the same issue, where developers are like whatever...we're going to stick to making our games for the base model only.

Hopefully not (for prospective X buyers) but it is the1st generation of a new console and it's never a good idea to buy into anything that's 1st gen because if it does prove to be somewhat of a success, it's becomes obsolete before you can even put your wallet back in your pocket after paying for it and is superseded by the 2nd gen, or something far better by the competition. The tech industry is purely profit driven and everything else is inconsequential.
When Sony does release it's competitor to the XB1(X)... who dreams up these 'original' nomenclatures?... it'll make you wonder where you pour the paraffin (kerosine) in the XB1(X) to get it fired up.
I don't believe that Sony mouthpiece for a second, they've already got something up their sleeve. If they haven't, they'll be driven out of the game console market before they can wipe the crap out of their eyes.

My bet is that the Xbox one X will become the next console of Microsoft with exclusive games in about 1 - 2 years. The X has got the horsepower that it takes to be a next gen console. The Pro just has enough to provide a somewhat good VR experience on the... 3 - 5 VR games that are worth having?

They certainly wont want to stick to the base model because its so limited in power. How is a new Gears of War or Tomb Raider in a year supposed to run on the original Xbox One? 720p below 30fps on a medium setting???

I bet Microsoft will make Windows 10 an universal OS sometimes in the next few years, from x86 CPUs to ARM, something it's already trying, make it an monthly subscription service with more streamed/online functions then it's already possible nowadays, and finnally make Direct X whatever version comes be hardware agnostic too, so you will in a near future be able to add graphics power to any computing platform.

As gaming consoles are already too close to a PC, making an PS or XBOX will not be so profitable anymore, than we will see the rise of Partner Makers (as is EVGA, MSI, ASUS) making the hardware for 'consoles' and perhaps Microsoft, Sony, and perhaps even Apple selling 'branded' hardware, just like what's happening with phones right now.

The phone update cycle is faster then PC update cycle, so Phone's SoCs development is starting to surpass common desktop/laptops cpus and gpus development. Sooner then later it will surpass the processing power of desktop cpus/gpus.

So I believe.
