Man, am I getting old: It's hard to believe I have been gaming on PlayStation consoles for almost 30 years. I've owned multiple versions of each generation and still have at least one of each gathering dust in my closet. To celebrate the three-decade milestone, Sony is going retro.

And... it's gone – Update (Sept 26): As expected, Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro Anniversary Edition sold out fast. Pre-orders for the collector's bundle opened this morning with a $1,000 price tag, and all 12,300 units were claimed within seconds. Scalpers are already offering them on eBay for ridiculous asking prices.

Of course, this was not necessarily because the pricey console was in high demand. Like the standard PS5 launch on November 12, 2020, scalper bots likely grabbed most of these boxes. Back then, Sony Direct was about the best chance of getting a console since you had to log in to your PSN account to place an order. Unfortunately, it rarely sold them there, preferring to give allotments to retailers due to supply shortages.

The scalpers have worked on their bots for four years and have surely figured out how to circumvent Sony's sign-in requirement. That's the only logical explanation for them selling that fast. Even if 12,300 were already waiting for them to go on sale, adding to your cart and checking out would take a human more than just a few seconds.

Those anxiously waiting to place a pre-order for a PlayStation 5 Pro might want to hold on a second. Sony just announced that it is releasing a 30th-anniversary edition that harkens back to the days of PlayStation yore. The deck comes in classic PlayStation gray and sports the old multicolor PS logo. Each unit also has its limited edition number etched into it. Of course, a matching two-tone gray DuelSense Edge controller compliments the package.

The bundle comes with a 2TB SSD, WiFi 7, a DualSense charging station, and a cover for the disc drive compartment--disc drives are sold separately (above). It also comes with a few other non-essential but cool collector items, including an original PlayStation controller-style cable connector housing, cable ties, a PS Sticker, a poster, and a PS paperclip (below).

Sony didn't reveal a price on the classically themed bundle, but expect to pay more than $700 because that's what the standard PS5 Pro will retail at--assuming you can even get one. Sony will only make 12,300 retro PS5 Pros, which will undoubtedly go very fast.

If you aren't in the market for a PS5 Pro but are looking for a standard model, Sony has you covered with the 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. It sports a 1TB SSD, a matching DualSense controller (not the Edge), and the same swag as the Pro model. The blog post did not mention a limited supply of these collector units, so it might be easier to get them.

Finally, to be all-inclusive, Sony will release a retro-themed PlayStation Portal, DualSense, and DualSense Edge controllers. Again, these items have no prices yet, but they should be reasonable.

Fans can pre-order the PlayStation 5 Pro, Portal, and DualSense Edge limited editions through PlayStation Direct beginning September 26. Sony has 26 retail partners that will stock those items in regions where PS Direct is unavailable.

Pre-orders for the retro PS5 Digital Edition and DualSense controller (not Edge) also open on the 26th through PlayStation Direct. If you must order from a retailer, reservations won't start until October 10 for the PS5 Digital. However, controller pre-orders through retailers are still on September 26.

Those ordering from a regular retailer might consider dusting off any tricks they used for procurement during the 2020 PS5 Covid launch just in case because scalpers will snatch these up fast. Regardless of venue or SKU, all orders will ship on November 21. Happy hunting.

Funny how Sony made sure to disclose the amount of PS5 Pros that will be available in that color...that's like saying "hurry and spend that money"

If the barebones PS5 Pro with not even a disc drive will retail for $700.00 expect this bundle to be no less than $999.99...and still will not include a disc drive.

PlayStation:
Desperation Has No Limits.

Okay, we get it. You hate Playstation. Move on. No need to vent it in every topic about Sony.

When you have a family of your own, a mortgage, bills and children to take care of then you will understand better.
I have it all. 2 houses, apartment, beach house, several cars, motorbike and a boat.
I can still easily afford to upgrade.

700 dollars is alot for you? Peanuts really. If I wanted a PS5, I would buy the Pro any day of the week.
700 bucks is a lot for a console with no games. Especially when the base PS5 will play all those same games and the Pro is nowhere near powerful enough to make these games run at 60 FPS at 4k, let alone 120. Hell it'll be unable to keep them at 1080p60 without upscaling. No game can be made to take advantage of its hardware because they must be PS5 compatible.

Plus, another $80 for the disk drive. After tax, that is $842. To play the same rehashes. And if you want to take advantage of the few exclusive the PS5 hass, you'll also need the VR headset.

Just like the PS3 at $599, the PS5 pro at $700 is an overpriced dumpster fire. And now hellblade is coming to PC, so that's one less exclusive of the tiny number they had that is now on the superior PC.

There's no need for hostility. He's allowed to have his opinion.

Bragging about your wealth really isnt a good look. Assuming you're A) telling the truth and B) own that stuff outright, 99.99% chance that's all funded on massive debt and one downturn of your employment would leave you homeless.

Let's rephrase that to human language:

Since our overpriced PS5 sales didn't go as well as we planned due to lack of braindead consumers we are now introducing collector's edition in hopes that they will be easier do dumb into buying our hugely overpriced junk.

There is no way they weren't already planning this 30th Anniversary Edition PS5 Pro before the PS5 Pro announcement. It takes months to plan and develop products, even ones that are simply cosmetic changes. There are a lot of logistics that happen behind the scenes that most people don't consider.

Not when it's a paint job
There's not much more to it

Is one of those cars a Bugatti ?, this post really made me laugh , no jetpack? come on man only a bum has no jetpack. You are trying way too hard.

As others have posted this is what the standard console should look like.

The fact you find this funny, I find funny. Like it's not even possible :joy:

Set some goals. Reach them. I did.

This is not bragging, its just reality.

I see people complain about a 700 dollar console and I think; How old are they? 15? I can literally spend that amount in a few hours eating out with the familiy...

I am a grown up. I make dime. Did for years. Did for decades. Nah, no debt here.
I made tons of money on crypto and stocks while having a job that pays well.

Set goals. Reach them. Instead of complain about hardware prices while doing nothing day in and day out.

If Sony had any sense (which they don't) they would flood the market with more of these consoles. Allow pre-orders for the next 30 days and then produce the exact number that was pre-ordered. It would still be technically "limited edition" because you only had a limited period to order it. That would destroy the scalper profit margins. Of course Sony would never do this.

I wouldn't give my personal info and why the hell I should have a PSN account to buy a steam game?

No thanks keep your $$hit.

You realize you're saying this on a tech forum, where most of the posters are probably knee-deep in expensive hardware?

Yeah, PS Pro is overpriced to some extent - especially the add on for physcial media, no excuses here. But if you think about it for a sec, so is most of modern PC hardware. My 4070 was 600 USD alone, never mind the rest of the stuff.

Most of the people complaining about prices, are knee-deep in second hand stuff :joy:
