SP2 and directx 9.0c install errors

I can't get sp2 or directx 9.0c to install, both error out during installation, sp2, when it fails cause windows to crash to and becomes unstartable till i run repair/reinstall, it has a copy error on sp2.cab

First install SP2 from a CD (free from M$ or your friends), not via online updates.
Then install directx separately.
