Random CPU temperatures

I just recieved a Intel Pentium 4 processor that I bought off of Ebay. When I use speedfan and even the temperature readouts in the bios, the reported temperature is jumping all over the place. It constantly changes anywhere from-5 C to 70 C. Is the temperature sensor messed up or should I worry?

Its most likely your defective temperature sensor. Mine once said my CPU was running at 294 C.... Now if it really was running at that, My heatsink would be getting so hot it would probably melt puke: Anyway, make sure your heatsink is fastened correctly and if it is, then no, you shouldnt be worried about those temps. :)

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot

Is the bios reporting the fan rpm correctly?
If the rpm's are stable (not jumping around)
then 11teen is right...

Also check to see the cpu pins are ok, not bent or missing.

Download a copy of
everest home
and
CPUZ

just to compare cpu temp stabilities...

Sensor

Sounds like a sensor problem. But I would go ahead and check to see if a bios update is available (might be a synchronization problem). I'd explore that first, then worry about a faulty temp. sensor.
