Steam connection issue

Hello! I just made this account so that I could have my question answered. Why can't I connect to steam so that I can begin my Left 4 Dead installation?!?!!? Every time I try and install Left 4 Dead, the same message appears: Cannot onnect to steam network. This could be a problem with steam or with your internet connection. I can connect to the steam website I even have 2 accounts! I've tried everything from plugging my modem directly into my computer, to getting rid of my previous anti-virus program Mcafee and getting Norton to completly shutting down ALL my firewalls! Can anybody help me! I am insanely frustrated and I just want to play Left 4 Dead! I didn't even want Steam in the first place!
