Synology has released a new five-bay Network Attached Storage (NAS) server capable of housing up to 15TB of data using 3TB SATA hard drives. The DS1511+ is a successor to their popular DS1010+ server model, designed specifically for easy file sharing, scheduled backups, remote access, centralized management, and even the hosting of up to 30 web sites via a built-in web server.

The unit is powered by an unspecified 1.8GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of DDR2 RAM, expandable to 3GB, while the company’s DiskStation Manager 3.0 runs the show from the software side. The latter boasts features like multi-tasking, multimedia streaming, and Time-Machine-like back-up options. Other features include enhanced iSCSI support, four USB 2.0 and two eSATA ports, DLNA/UPnP support for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, comprehensive audio, video and image file format compatibility, and free iPhone and Android apps. In terms of performance, Synology claims the DS1511+ is capable of pushing speeds of 165 MB/s while writing and 197 MB/s while reading (in RAID 5).

Furthermore, when the DS1511+ is connected with two of the company’s DX510 server storage expansion units, the NAS server is capable of managing a whopping 45TB of storage. With a price tag of around $900 it’s not particularly intended for home use but rather small and medium businesses. The DS1511+ is available now and comes with 3-year warranty and technical support.

That, I have to say, is pretty impressive! although I feel the read speed needs to be improved a little If it is going to host 30 websites.
