'System has recovered from a serious error'

Hi

I've been experiencing problems with my laptop in that every now and then it will just randomly turn itself off and restart. Sometimes it will go for a few weeks without doing this, and other times it will happen 4 or 5 times a day. Just before it does this it shows a blue screen with some error message on it (which only appears for a split second, and so I cannot read what it says).

Once the laptop has restarted and is up and running, it comes up with the error message 'System has recovered from a serious error' and lists details of a folder named 'WER14d7.dir00' in the Temp folder, with two different files inside it which are logged as the problem. Now, i've searched for the 'WER14d7.dir00' folder, which can be found, but there is nothing in it (???). When I try to open the folder it says '.......\WER14d7.dir00 refers to a location that is unavailable...' and so on.

Anyone have any ideas what this is? or how I could solve it? Would really appreciate any ideas...

Thanks

Hi RJames123 and welcome to TechSpot

In Xp go to:

Control Panel -> System -> Advanced (Tab) -> Startup And Recovery "Settings"
And deselect "Automatically Restart" OK, Apply, OK.

Also in

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer
To view any events that have caused error

This may in fact just be an overheating issue (common to laptops)
