I've been having some serious issues with loading the website lately (a weeks or two now?). It happens in multiple locations (home, work, mobile). Traceroute and ping show no issue. It happens very often.

It's not just here, there have been some serious DDos attacks again over the weekend, it seems to have been targeting Cloud flair accounts [well the ones I know have been]

There are many reasons your connection may be slow [far too many to list] so to generalise
slow connections can be caused by excessive load on either your ISP server, the destination site server, or even one of the many routing servers between the two points,
It can be an indication of a DDos attack in progress, if you get an HTTP error page it will usually have a 5** code or occasionally 4** code,, in this case first check if the destination site is down, to do this I recommend hetrix tools, if its a site you regularly use or are responsible for, alternatively you could use a checker such as https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/
If the site is not down, try deleting cookies for that site and refreshing

When it was happening on multiple devices including mobile, it wasn't my connection or browser that was the issue. But if cloudflare is experiencing DDOS attacks then yeah, that explains it.

This past week we've seen multiple DDoS attacks but thanks to Cloudflare those are getting blocked after 1 minute or so (every time), so the slow downs are there but for very brief moments. If you're seeing consistent slowdowns though, it might be something else... perhaps a CF node close to your location not working properly. Let me know.

It's pretty constant throughout the day and I've seen it last for much longer than just 1 minute. I'll keep you updated.

For literally years, I've had issues loading pages here. I've given up complaining about it. I mean. so what if I have to renew a page a half dozen times before it loads.

Hey man, I just want to be a part of something larger than just myself.

PS, Sometimes it seems that page access. or posting, is predicated on the length of time I hold the mouse button down the. Sometimes it takes just a millisecond blip, and well, sometimes it takes a lot longer.

😯 I thought that was finally fixed a while back Cap.

I had a similar situation for a long time. Sometimes it could go hours before it would finally log me on. I tried other PCs and mobile devices'.
Finally, in early 2019 I just signed up again and all was fixed.
I made my name scavengerspc, where my old one was scavengers pc.

It kind of sucked because I had been registered here since at least
2002 or 03 and had to start over.

How is the situation going on your end this week?
Pretty sure your issue is CDN related and not the same as the other members above.

Not a chance. The situation has "improved" a wee bit, but IMO, it's due to a "more powerful" web box. I'm "all the way up" to an i3-539 8 GB 64 bit OS.

This next bit is going to be contemplative, speculative, comparative, and based an assumption.

I don't think this software handles large data bases very well. As you say you were registered for 20+ years, I'm assuming you had a post count similar to mine, and your current count, is only since your re-registering.

I had a copy of Photoshop Elements 7, and tried to load a huge (bigly?) catalog of what I think of as "erotic art". Well, when I tried to copy it over to another machine, the catalog wouldn't load past the letter "G".

So, is this issue that, or that issue this? IDK, but I've obviously seen something similar before. It superficially seems the same. But if there is any actual correlation, I haven't a clue.

Maybe I'll just put in my 20, retire, and live off my likes. 🤣

BTW, that's an i3-530. Another little quirk is if you miss accessing "edit" on the first try, you have to (attempt), to reload the page. Hence this "addendumb".

It seems to be better now. I'll keep you updated.
It's an off again on again issue. I complained about it back in Feb 2023.

If you clear all your login info for the site and visit it incognito, it runs fine, but the moment you log back into your account and create a new cookie the whole forum reverts to 56k mode. Then for no reason a week or two later the problem will disappear.

This happens across devices and operating systems on multiple internet providers, and when it occurs there is no performance loss for any other websites, only techspot.

Ive been having the same issue the past few weeks. If I am signed in, the site is unusable. If I sign out, the site works fine. Multiple devices, multiple browsers, multiple locations. As long as I am signed in, techspot doesnt work at all and forum usage is completely broken.

If I sign out, everything works perfectly.

Same thing I'm seeing right now but I think it's because I'm being purposely rate limited by XenForo, the software that runs this site. I think I may have pissed off a moderator or two around these parts and I'm willing to admit it.

I'm going to walk away from this site for six or so months. Maybe by then my soft-ban will be lifted.

I made a post here and it's not public when I log out. That just reinforces the idea that I'm soft-banned for being a bad boy.

Oh well, see ya in six months or so. That is, if I ever choose to come back. Peace out!

Funny thing is, every time this happened to me, it was after a moderated post. I think you are right.

Some folks on this site are in the moderators pocket, they can insult you but if you return the favor, nope. Soft banned and moderated out.

Mine has since started working.

For several weeks now TS page have had serious issues loading. This happens regardless of the browser being used(Brave, FireFox, Chromium). Pages take forever to load, if they load at all. I sometime have to refresh a dozen times or more just to see anything.

Techspot having issues with their servers?

And these issues continue. Is Techspot trying to combat these bot and troll accounts that have been popping up lately?

Just a heads-up: As some of you participating in this thread may already know, moderators can issue warnings when posts violate our community guidelines. In most cases, the post in question is also removed.

Until now, these warnings didn’t offer much explanation. Going forward, however, you’ll receive more context—along with information on whether any warning points have been applied to your account.

Here’s an example of what the new notices look like:

As a result of this incident, two warning points have been added to your account. These points will expire after a certain period, but please note that repeated violations may lead to suspension or a permanent ban.

We understand that mistakes happen and hope this is a one-time issue. Thank you for helping keep TechSpot a constructive and welcoming community.

In short, our forum software will automatically suspend accounts based on accumulated warning points before any temporary or permanent bans occur.

The goal isn’t to punish but to discourage personal attacks and other behavior that can harm an otherwise healthy tech community. But, if we recognize a pattern of negativity, confrontation and personal attacks, that will get you banned for good.

I know most of you are actively participating and you are long-time readers and members of the TS community, so thanks for your cooperation.

The goal isn’t to punish
So, in reality, you're punishing people who "misbehave" by deliberately interfering with their interactions on the site? You think that is going to help? Never a good look.

I've never seen such a tactic work effectively. Whether online, in the workplace or in a school environment, using these strict kinds of methods to "enforce" rule sets only ever works to make the enforcer look very bad. It's a plan of and for failure.

Finally, it seems that the "soft ban" for my account has been lifted. No longer does it feel like I'm on an old school 56K modem when I try to load even a simple news article when logged in with my account.

This doesn't change anything though. I really do need to not be so aggressive around these parts. That and avoid outright political threads for it seems to bring out the worst in me.
