What just happened? Covid-19 means December’s Game Awards will be very different from previous events, but something that hasn’t changed is the number of quality titles that have been selected. This year, The Last of Us Part II has the honor of receiving most nominations—ten—while Hades has eight and the excellent Ghost of Tsushima has seven.

Back in September, Game Awards creator and host Geoff Keighley revealed that the December 10 show would switch to an all-digital affair this year. It’s also taking place across three cities—Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo—rather than just the usual Microsoft Theater in LA, where it’s been held since 2015. It will stream on 45 platforms, including YouTube and Twitch.

It’s been a good year of PlayStation 4 owners. Two of the platform’s exclusive titles—The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima—have seventeen nominations between them. Both are up for the coveted Game of the Year title alongside Doom Eternal, Hades, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Roguelike Hades, available on PC, Mac, and Nintendo Switch, has the second-most nominations with eight. It’s followed by Ghost of Tsushima (seven) and the very popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which appears in four categories.

Having the most nominations doesn’t always translate into most wins, of course. Last year saw Death Stranding nominated in ten categories but win only three—Disco Elysium was the biggest winner on the night, coming away with four awards, while Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was the deserved Game of the Year.

You can vote for your favorite games here.

I've really been enjoying Hades. The artistic style, music, and character development are all really well done. It's also easy to pick up and play for 30 minutes.

For me, 2020 has been more about the games that haven't shown up: Dying Light 2, Vampire: The Masquerade 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. Hopefully C2077 is actually coming out in December.

loU2 is just a bad game, can't understand where all the media hype came from, played through the game nearly twice trying to figure it out. Story sucked, characterization sucked, gameplay wise it couldn't tell whether it wanted to be linear or open world, combat was boring and trope with nothing really new, graphical glitches, broken rpg level dynamics, praised themselves for adding a jump button in 2020.
The worst part is it's not even subjective criticism on a fundamental level but a technical non-bias objective fact it was terrible, it's like people needed it to be a masterpiece for some reason, which it is far from being, it's not even Torment Planescape level of Story or Characterization and pretty much broke every decent rule that a college grad knows from writing classes, to the point the characters are unbelievable for their choices considering the environment and context, it's high school fan fiction bad levels of writing, which is sad because graphically, voice acting, and a few other areas it was decent to top notch in performance and design.
