The US plans to offer EU citizens the same privacy rights as Americans

US attorney general Eric Holder recently announced that the US plans to extend Europeans the same privacy rights it does with US citizens. Speaking at a US/EU home affairs and justice ministers gathering in Greece recently, Holder said the the Obama administration plans to create legislation to protect Europeans essentially the same way Americans are under the 1974 Privacy Act.

EU citizens will be granted "the same right to seek judicial redress for intentional or willful disclosures of protected information and for refusal to grant access or to rectify any errors in that information," Holder said at the meeting.

The Privacy Act "prohibits the disclosure of a record about an individual from a system of records absent the written consent of the individual, unless the disclosure is pursuant to one of twelve statutory exceptions," as defined by the US Department of Justice. The exceptions mentioned are things like public studies and law enforcement among others.

While it appears the US is trying to mend ties with the EU after Snowden documents put top secret NSA espionage operations across the European Union out in the public, some European officials are not yet convinced by Holder's announcement. He is being somewhat criticized for his lack of detail with the supposedly upcoming legislation, sparking some to question its validity. EU justice commissioner Viviane Reding told the Guardian that "words only matter if put into law." As with most of these things, only time will tell if it the the US actually takes the "legislative step," as Reding puts it.

Lol what a f***ing joke. So they will spy and collect data on anyone/anywhere/anytime without them knowing and if they find something they don't like they will use it against you or might have you arrested/investigated.
EU are going to love it.

So, let me get this straight: These people effectively erase the U.S./Mexico border, fudge up "healthcare", allow the IRS to pull criminal shenanigans, allow U.S. embassies to fall virtually uncontested, allow the VA to become dysfunctional, trade terrorists for a highly suspect "hostage" while leaving other service members out in the wind, spy on everyone under the sun, reduce U.S. foreign authority to a punch line, fail to effectively address structural problems with the U.S. economy over 6 years, and now they're extending rights to foreign citizens?

Somebody get this man a clown car, because this three rings circus needs some wheels!

But doesn't the US spy on every soul in the world already and what privacy do they offer their citizens? The 1974 privacy act is probably just lip service and there for the show. The NSA is probably unaware of it's existence and if they are, they must feel it doesn't apply to them.

Since you've put this into a circus context, wouldn't it be better if they shot him out of a cannon with a pair of American flags in his teeth, and couple of olive branches sticking out of his a**?(y)

God no. We'd never hear the end of it once the media picked up on the white cannon smoke.

So? The media never let's us hear the end of it when Kim Kardashian farts. :holdsnose: Why should they deprive us of hearing about, "tales of the amazing flying windbag"?

The days of the US calling the tune are done. He might as well be the Mayor of some town in Malaysia.

He already is the mayor of "Canana".

That's why captain plugged his *** with olive branches. lol
Sorry, I can not in good conscience accept any credit for controlling the white smoke. I was addressing the olive branches toward controlling the brown smoke. The atomized "Eau du Bull", as it were.

great now they gonna charge us a monthly subscription? pfft

I'm Cananian Canadian, we have the same "rights." We need a complete retaliation towards government and law enforcement to take back our rights. Unfortunately people are just sitting back as what's left of their freedom is stripped away for greed and power.

Well, as long as you don't hurt the Mountie's horses, I suppose it would be all right.

Why don't you slash all your non-crack smoking mayor's tires? But do leave the fat, funny, drunken one alone.(y)
