Thoughts on Vista/What is Your Problem With Vista

I guess I should consider myself lucky. Because I'm a college student, my University offered huge discounts on software. I can get Home Premium for about 90 dollars. Amazing? I think so. Others aren't so lucky. I might consider ordering a few people a copy if I get paid in advance =D.

That's of course if anyone trusts me and if anyone truly wants Vista anyway.

But you're right about the pricing. They pulled a Sony. 600 US dollars for a PS3?...300 dollars for some stupid OS? I mean COME ON. WHAT THE F***?

They appeal to the younger age groups by suggesting better gaming and overall usage, and then they forget that young people often don't have money. The parents usually front the cash. I'm a college student. You think I have money?

The least they could do is make it affordable. But nooo. They're microsoft. Bill Gates has to have his cash fix so he can keep taking over the world...

You are all over the place, 1st you talk about Vista, then the PS3 then Bill Gates. Which one should be affordable? lol

i only have one point for the whole DRM story.

if song writers, movie makers, and distributors were smart, they would digitalize everything and cut out writing it to a CD completely. then start selling ALL of the material via download programs like MAC does. it's clear that CDs are the culprits anyway. soon as one cd hits some smart kid's home, he copies it and starts giving it to his friends.

and yeah...as for the whole vista thing, i'd say make Bill Gates our slave, like he did to us.

They will never ever be able to stop piracy. When there's a will, there's a way. Guess they are unhappy with making 50 billion in profits in one year. They have to charge out the crapper for their software and find ways to screw the users even more.

The reason people ****** I find is because the prices on software/music etc are so high. Then the industry blames it on the people who ****** the stuff. So it's a never ending circle.

but as my opinion on Vista as a whole, I think they should have put more effort forward by increasing the security for the user and not for the companies profits by preventing the illegal use of pretty much everything. I will also paste in the table of contents from that website which will sum up why I think Vista is poo.

"Indirect Disabling of Functionality
Decreased Playback Quality
Elimination of Open-source Hardware Support
Elimination of Unified Drivers
Problems with Drivers
Denial-of-Service via Driver/Device Revocation
Decreased System Reliability
Increased Hardware Costs
Increased Cost due to Requirement to License Unnecessary Third-party IP
Unnecessary CPU Resource Consumption
Unnecessary Device Resource Consumption"
Taken from A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection

I can see why the average user would like it though. Nice bubbly screensaver thing, nice looking desktop and menus. But from someone who supports computers and has had a career in the field of computers in both hardware and software, Vista is a nightmare and I hope they won't implement this in corporations since it would be nearly impossible to support. I don't even know what I would say if all of a sudden M$ revoked an entire companies device driver and we started to get calls regarding it. Tell the employee that they have to wait until the video card company codes another driver? ETA 2 years? never? jah? It's just a big joke that everyone has no choice in adhering to as large corps can't really just continue to use XP because M$ stops supporting it eventually (2009? or 4thQ 2008?).

I'd rather go back to carrier pigeons than use Vista in a corporate environment.

Well Kitty.....

Doesn't M$ own that now?
What about the Redhat enterprise? Is that any good?

Every year PCWorld magazine publishes a 100 best products list. This year they placed Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" at number 9, saying this: "Quick: Name a good Windows Vista feature that goes beyond what's in Tiger. Yeah, we can't either".

I see the driver issue as a template for hostile takeovers of smaller companies. Vista won't install unsigned drivers. M$ revokes the license of a smaller company. (Because of poor "can'tpayibility" issues). That company's stock plummets, and M$ marches in with a fistfull of cash to bail the poor devils out. That's assuming that M$ could be bothered, and doesn't put them out of business outright.
Meanwhile, we're getting, "Vista won't load unsigned drivers, so that your computer can't be damaged! See, we're the good guys"! WGA is good for us too! Thank you sir, may I have another?

Acually, I refused an update from MCE2005 to Vista Home Premium. I have 2 copies (OEM) they have COAs and are registered as is my MCE. I never throw away any receipts. Don't imply or accuse me of having cracked programs. I have Microsoft do to that for you. Cheers, A*****E. See, you're not the only one who knows how to use the asterisk.

LOL, I wasn't refering to you specifically, didn't mean to offend you . Although i do know people who refuse to use vista simply because that can't pay for it and actually have to buy it. How the world of computers is upside down.
cheers

P.S. I believe that open source operating systems are the way of the future, I like Vista but just now I got myself a copy of Fedora 7 and I'm going to go have a tinker around with it and maybe put it on my PS3...or not.

I am sick of these kind of people who just hate microsoft for the sake of fitting in...

Me too, old chap. Me too.

Oh, and Vista is still running just fab on my aging Thinkpad T42. I just recommend a minimum of 2GB, but really that's almost standard today.

Becareful there Phantasm66, someone might use your forum message to describe what they might say to Bill Gates "Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed..." :p :p but yeah, you dont need a quad core intel CPU and 4gb to run vista like people make out. my computer is 5 years old, I just got an extra gig of ram and it runs like a dream now.

Hint: SARCASM

Wow man, I've watched this video when it came out and there's something amiss that MS copied anything from Apple: he was being SARCASTIC. Apple is truly a pioneer while MS is truly a copier of innovation...

So True. The beggining of M$ was actually buying early inventions off of the people who made computers possible today. Not to say he isn't a genius himself but he did buy the groundworks for what is Vista today.

and I hate Vista to fit into what exactly?

Well imo I think Vista has a lot of promise as XP truly (imo) is MS's best OS to date. I believe MS has good products and will go to Vista shortly; people i know are running it just fine for what they do, mostly gaming. I'd like to get a Mac for music production exclusively as I have owned three for this purpose, and they just slaughter PC in the areas of stability and performance.

I'm not an MS hater and/or an Apple bigot. I like what works for what I want to do. PC = gaming, Mac = content creation.

Agreed Coth. I took a one year media communications course and the Macs we worked on were 50x better than the PCs we had.

I'm sure I'll have no problem with Vista once I switch over. I don't agree with the underlying technical aspects of the OS though. I'll give it to SP1 then switch nmost likely

Here's a reiteration of my stance on things.

1) No large IT company is nice. They all do bad things, steal each others ideas, spy on one another, etc. Just look at these silly patent wars that go on. Even those companies who's product is open source are not nice guys. They exist to make money.

2) Vista is the new Windows. Get over it. Its what Microsoft have in store for you, its the way that Windows is going. If you don't like that, then a)buy a Mac, b)Install Linux, c)stop using computers.

3) Everyone whined all this crap when XP was released. I remember it well.

4) No one main OS (i.e Windows / Mac / Linux / FreeBSD / Solaris) is "better" than any other. They are different. What's better for me might not be better for you. You, like me, have a choice of what OS to run. If you want to continue to run XP forever then go ahead, just realize that Microsoft will drop that OS in a year or so.

5) A new operating system like Windows will, in general, tend more towards exploiting the features of new hardware than going out of its way to support old hardware. That is computing. That's what we expect. Damn right I want Vista to be more geared towards a modern machine with Dual Core, nice graphics, heaps of RAM because that is a modern machine. If we had to constantly keep ensuring new Operating Systems ran on old kit just as well, we'd never see the benefit of the new kit. If you need to run something that only ran in XP or 2000 then install Virtual PC or Vmware and then run it in there.

6) Vista has a whole host of really good, neat new features that are well worth investigating and using. But then again, you could say the same thing about Fedora 7 Linux too. See 4)

7) Some people do slag off Microsoft mindlessly, without stopping to think about the real benefits that company has brought to computing. We now live in a world where my grandmother has a laptop, and my five year old sister can install games. That's because of Microsoft, in part at least. Stop throwing mindless insults at them because you don't like Bill Gates business practices.... see point 1)

good lord. i couldn't agree more. i only have one thing to mention. the only real way we have to vent our frustration is through bashing bill gates. give us that much at least.

apart from that, i think you may very well have brought an end to this thread.

i too must commend you on your concise and well spoken words. like a true sage.

well to anyone out there saying how good VISTA is I will not stand in the way, but would like to mention to this thread that there is a lot of software that still does not work with VISTA, I use Quikbooks and they have not coverted to a program that will use vista and it is used by the most business in the US. there are a lot of other programs that are the same. now do not get me wrong I do wish they would get on the stick (all of them), but it is not that fast to rebuild a software.

WOW..... Really? Hint, I was being Sarcastic Too....

Dude, If you're so insufferably wrapped up in yourself that you didn't realize I knew the guy was being sarcastic when I posted that link, then you really need to get out more. Please refrain from using CAPITAL letters when you're stating the patently obvious. "The act of insulting someone else's intelligence normally requires possessing some of your own". Like that? I just made it up. I'll think Ill go post it in the "Thought for the Day" thread. Maybe we'll see ya there.

maybe slightly different in terms of direction, but i have a question for you all. has anyone here tried running one of the new games on vista lately? for example, halo 2 for PC? that new directx looks very very sexy. can anyone confirm whether or not, despite it's horrible reputation, vista is a good gaming platform? how are the graphics with some of the best hardware to date? are the games worthwhile?

screenshots for me to oggle at are not discouraged in the least =D

yar well i can't complain because i'm a college student and i can get premium for 90 bucks like i mentioned earlier. HA! TAKE THAT CHINESE! I CAN GET IT FOR FORTY BUCKS LESS =D!!

just kidding.
