Thoughts on Vista/What is Your Problem With Vista

From the 06/20/07 Washington Post:

"Microsoft has agreed to revise its Vista operating system under a compromise with federal and state officials monitoring the company's compliance with a five-year-old antitrust decree, according to a court filing last night.

Microsoft's concession came after Google filed a complaint alleging that it and other competitors were unfairly disadvantaged by how Microsoft designed the feature for conducting computer-desktop searches. In particular, Google said that it was difficult to turn off the Microsoft desktop search and that Google's desktop search ran too slowly when users chose it as an alternate.

A company executive said Microsoft would allow users to select a default desktop search provider in the same way they choose a default Internet browser or media player. The executive spoke on condition of anonymity because the company had not authorized him to be quoted. The company is also adding links to make it easier for users to add other desktop searches, the executive said. Finally, Microsoft will provide technical information to other companies so they can make their desktop programs run more smoothly on Vista, the executive said."

I thought the little search bar there was pretty annoying since it got in the way of my windows at the bottom (and probably since I've been using Windows 98 for 8 years before 2 weeks ago) so I uninstalled Google Desktop. I'm very capable of taking the extra second to open an internet window and type in the search from there.

I have to say upon reading each and ever single page of this thread that people have a lot of diffent views on the subject.

I agree XP was no walk in the park thats for sure, thoses silly little blue screens drove me crazy i ended up having to change two hard drives on one computer and something else on another when XP came out.

I think that one thing that I agree to even though I've got a copy of Visita now Is that I'm giving it till the end of the year my new computer might be visita ready and i would most likely get away with installing now, But wait till the first service packs all programs come out with bugs.

Also another idea run a dual system keep XP and run vista as a secondry system until your mor comfrotable with Visita

It seems to me that one must have a reason to shift to VISTA... So far, we have discovered none. VISTA is merely another operating system... not a more appealing or useful one. It is a pain in the rear to learn something new just of the sake of owning the latest useless thing.

It is kind of cool, and people may buy it for reasons of novelty or whatever. However, people are saying that XP wasn't well-received at its launch; but remember that there have been two service packs since then. I think that before Service Pack 1 you weren't even able to join a domain.

So XP has come a long way since its launch, and hopefully Vista will do the same. In the meantime, however, I'm running XP.

Then why aren't you using 2000? XP is 2000 with a bubbly interface and a couple more wizards.

Personally I had problems from day one with Vista. Problems ranged from not being able to install Flight Simulator X, Test drive unlimited, The Godfather ( this one to work after renaming the films folder). Other problems encountered were:
1. Wireless network rarely worked. Kept getting the message that no network was found.
2. A lot of crashes when playing games.
3. Vista doesn't like playing certain video files in Media Player (message: The program has stopped working)
4. Problems with latency, even with a very good sound card.

After these problems and some which I cant remember anymore, I formatted my disk and installed XP Home again and all the problems where resolved. For the time being in my opinion Vista is still full of bugs and if you don't have a reason to upgrade then stick to your current OS.

Vista home came with my new Toshiba laptop, and every day has become a new adventure with Vista.I have had nothing but problems with this OS from day one. Windows Mail will not allow me to delete some of my messages in the in or out box.Now I have a problem with not being able to empty the recycle bin.It will freeze up for no good reason, and the only way is to shut down and reboot. So far I have not been able to find a cure for any of these ills. I HATE VISTA !
I'll take XP any day.

Using a CME UF8 controller keyboard going through the midi input on my XFI Fatality Platinum using either windows sounds or hypersonic I get latancy. Delay which makes it impossible to play.

I don't get this. I don't really care much I just hope that when I install Vista on my main rig it doesn't happen.

My main gripe is that it doesn't support 16-bit apps (One example is WinGroove: the MIDI that comes with today's sound cards is crappy). I know that 16-bit is pretty old, but with my collection of games, I NEED 16-bit support. I've already tried Virtual PC 2007 (I have Windows XP Home) and IT SUCKS. Unless they make it work better (especially in the sound and graphics emulation department), I will only upgrade to Vista when I'm FORCED to. I already had to do it with Win98SE to Win2000 (nothing supports Windows 98SE anymore).

If you NEED 16bit apps then you don't have any buisness running Vista. You seem to want to complain about that, but come on, its like complaining an 8 inch floppy won't connect to a brand new motherboard.

I'm sure if you just looked around in the newspapers or freecycle you'd find that you can get a Pentium or maybe even a Pentium II machine for free, or at least dirt cheap that you can run around with your Windows 98 all day on. But don't complain when an OS designed for modern computers won't run your ancient software. Its not a legitimate complaint.

Pretty old??? it is 16 years old, and was never any good to begin with... That is back in the days of Windows 3.11 and Windows 95. Good Grief~!

You cannot hold onto the past, and have new and better products in the future....

You are probably the only person this side of Mount Everest that wishes FAT16 were still around.

Whew!

Vista is a terrible OS

It is, honestly, coming from someone who works in the field, from someone who is MCP and MCDST and a bunch of other crap, from someone who is a Microsoft Partner, the worst thing to come out of Redmond in 7 years.

I pray it suffers the same fate as Windows ME

The end

Soul Harvester,
you must have experience on some pretty crappy hardware. Just like a state-of-the-art system built 10 years ago, compares to a state-of-the-art system of today, Vista will prove to be a worthy OS eventually. Afterall XP had it problems too in the beginning

So far, that has not proved to be the case. The problem with VISTA is that there is no reason yet for purchasing it. With Windows XP, W2K, or Me or 98, there were significant improvements promised. WME turned out to be a turkey bcause they added media center stuff that was not adequately tested, and the problems multiplied the longer you owned it... An annual reformat and reinstall was necessary.
However, there were major benefits from 95 to 98, 98 to W2K, W2K to WXP, But so far, none I detect after 87 installs, from WXP to VISTA. It is just more money for Bill Gates to pay his fines in Europe and China.

Excuse me?

A dual-core system with 4 gigs of ram and an 8800 GTS is crappy hardware?

A quad-core system with 16gigs of ram and 15krpm SCSI HDD is crappy hardware?

A vmware server with 16 cores, 16 gigs of ram and 6x15RPM SCSI HDD is crappy hardware?

No, I think not. The crap here is Vista.

There is absolutely no excuse for an OS on fresh boot to consume 2.5GB of ram when idling. Think I'm joking? Go take a look yourself.

I think some of the RAM usage seems to depend on the amount of RAM you have, but maybe it depends on the version of Vista.

Perhaps some of the resource hogging will be resolved in future service packs and/or updates.

Edit: Check out this article on Windows XP (back when TS was still 3DSpotlight).

Well now, how does it feel you ask? It feels incredibly slow on the first system. That might just be an understatement. It feels ridiculously slow. If your system specs look anything like my first system, or even a little better, Windows XP is going to depress you. To even illuminate desktop settings requires a bit a patience, which is not saying much. I know after this little review, I will be turning back to Windows ME for my fossilized system. I added 64megs of ram to system 1, and Windows seemed to chug around a little better. It's still a little slow, but the extra ram really gave it a good kick in the but.t. I think I might have to reconsider my previous decision.
