Well TSMC has already built a fab here in the states. Although, I'm pretty sure it isn't responsible for the bulk of their production. (yet).Like seriously what can possibly be accomplished by this move if it was to be serious? Taiwan says no and the US plummets into a technology dark age while the rest of the world thrives? Taiwan says yes, gets invaded by the CCP and probably is not able to protect their tech in time since as discussed, it would literally take several years to just get a few of the fabs moved over?
Look, we know ridiculous threats actually do work against weakened, subservient economies: Petro from Colombia learn that the hard way over the weekend. But do you they seriously think corporations like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. That absolutely depend on TSMC remaining alive for the time being will be as easy to push over and submit to 25-100% tariffs?
However, it does lock the US into what I would call either a "tacit", or , "defacto", mutual defense agreement. TSMC is now, (however unstated or unrealistic). an "American company".
They also opened a 20 billion dollar fab in Japan.
